If so, please let them know about our Kindergarten Registration event taking place today from 11:30-1:30 p.m. and tonight from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Additional information regarding Kindergarten registration is included in this newsletter.
Classroom Valentine's Day parties for grades K-5 are scheduled for Tuesday, February 14th. Please remember that all edible treats must be store bought and in their original packaging with nutritional information visible. If your child is in a peanut/tree nut free classroom, please be extra vigilant in making sure that your treats do not contain allergens. Even treats made in facilities where nuts are used in other recipes cannot be served in some of our classrooms. If you have any questions about whether your treats are ok, please check with us before the party.

Today Kindergarten Registration
Today
Kindergarten Registration will be held
today from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. and in the evening from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.
for the 2017-18 school year. Beginning with the 2017-18 year, the entry date changes from October 1st to August 1st. A child who is 5 years old or who will turn 5 by August 1st will be eligible to enroll in Kindergarten. The following items must be submitted for enrollment: Enrollment form, birth certificate, ssn card, proof of residency - gas, electric or water bill, and a copy of parent's driver license. Necessary medical forms are an up-to-date immunization certificate, physical exam, eye exam and dental screening. Our next Royal Roll Out Skate Night will be February 16th! All students are welcome to join us from 6-8 p.m. at the Independence Skateway. Volleyball Program 
Boys/Girls - Grades 4 & 5
The Kenton County Volleyball Program will once again offer an 8-week program for any boy or girl in grades 4 & 5 interested in volleyball. The program focuses on basic skills and techniques and how to apply skills in a game setting. The program begins March 6, 2017 and the cost is $30 per student. Karate club will be offered to any K-5 student interested in enrolling. The Karate Club classes are held at Martial Arts America from
5:40 -6:20 p.m. The classes are schedule for four Mondays in a row (March 2, 9, 16 & 23) . This club is free to the first 40 students that sign up. Please see registration attached.

KCAIT Accepting
Applications
The Kenton County Academies of Innovation and Technology will begin accepting applications January 11
th
! All Kenton County students are welcome to apply and are accepted on a first come, first served basis. If interested, it is imperative that you complete your application ASAP. Applications will be accepted until February 24
th
for 8
th
grade students, but remember, Academy spots fill up fast, so visit KCAIT on the Kenton County Schools website to fill out your application today.
Note: Students who are accepted to the Academies will be committed until they have completed the first 6 days of the program in August 2017. You may not relinquish your position until you have completed this trial period. No exceptions!
For more information about the Academies, please attend the showcase which will be held at Turkeyfoot Middle School on Tuesday, January 24th from 6-7:30pm. This is an informational event in which Dr. O'Hara will present and then parents and students will have the opportunity to converse with current Academy students to learn more about what they do in their programs. All students must be accompanied by a parent.
The Academies will also be at Summit View on February 9th and 10th to present to the 8thgraders during their science class. Please feel free to email the 8th grade counselor, Mrs. Madden at [email protected] if you have any further questions.

Biscuits for Fur Buddies
Reynolds' Class Service Learning Project
Hello SVA Families, 
My name is Kerri Reynolds and myclass will be working on a Service Learning Project throughout the school year where we will be making dog biscuits in the classroom and delivering them to the Kenton County Animal Shelter! My students will learn many vocational and life skills through this process. I am looking for donations to get this project running from start to finish. This project will last from November 1st and run through April 7th. We are in need of donations of the following items: peanut butter, oats, flour (white or whole wheat), eggs, chicken or beef bouillon cubes, salt, bananas, brown lunch bags and cookie cutters. We would also accept gift cards to Kroger, Walmart, Meijer, or Amazon (for Amazon Pantry) if you wish not to send in large items. Donations can be sent with your student or dropped off in the main office with "Attn: Reynolds, 101". Thank you in advance for your donations!

SVA First Grader Receives Proclamation
from the City of Independence
On February 7th, The City of Independence proclaimed the week of February 5-11, 2017 as Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week. Kyle Collins, a first grade student in Mrs. Amy Leonard's class, shared his story and experiences of having a congenital heart defect at the council meeting. Kyle was recognized at the meeting and was given the proclamation from the city. Congratulations to Kyle!

SBDM Minority Parent Needed
If a school has 8% or more minority enrollment at the beginning of the school year, the school must have minority representation on their school council. At this time, we do not have minority representation on school council. The SBDM Council criteria states the representative must be the minority. The schools SBDM council meets the third Tuesday of the month at 4:00 p.m. The purpose of SBDM is to discuss and make recommendations for student achievement. Royals Work Ethic Program

The Royals Work Ethic Program is an exciting way of honoring students who demonstrate a commitment to community. Each quarter will begin an opportunity for your child to meet the ten (10) academic standards necessary for this award. Every student who successfully completes these requirements will receive a certificate at the end of the quarter, and those who meet standards for 3 of the 4 quarters will be recognized at the Royal Work Ethic Banquet in May. If your child would like to participate, please return the permission slip. The dates the Community Service form is due for the remaining quarters are listed below:

Safety Reminders and Tips
During Parent Pick-Up/Drop Off
- Please follow the instructions of those helping to keep traffic flowing and everyone safe.
- Do not let phones, drinks, animals, or anything distract you from making certain students are safe.
- Always make certain your child has made it on the sidewalk before pulling away.
- Students should be prepared to exit the car (backpacks, coats, water bottle, lunch box, good-byes).
- Students should exit from the passenger side of vehicle.
- Student should NOT go in between vehicles.
- Do not begin rolling forward unless your eyes are looking forward.Instruct anyone who drops off or picks up your student as to the safety rules. Unfamiliar drivers create hazards for everyone.

Holly Hill Counseling Services
Holly Hill counseling services are available to interested families. Counselors will meet with your child during the school day. Counseling groups will be starting after fall break and are available for students with medical cards, or to those who would like to self-pay. Transportation Information
Bus Riders
- If there is a question on the status of a particular bus, parents and guardians can access our new app, My Bus Buddie, which will display the
current status and location of that bus
. The School District is providing a mobile app which can be accessed via a smart phone, laptop, or home PC (as long as the device has Internet connectivity and can access the Web). Should the transportation department wish to inform users of a significant delay for a bus or all buses, this app can show the anticipated delay time, i.e. one hour delay due to weather. Car Riders
- New car-riders numbers are assigned each school year. If you have a number from last year, please discard the old tag and request a new car rider number from the office for this school year. Our tags this year are yellow, instead of the ones we used last year. Also, for students in the YMCA/21st Century after/before school program, the numbers the YMCA uses are different than the school, so you will need both if you are have a student participating in that program.

Health News
Since hat/coat weather and flu season is fast approaching, here are some recommendations in dealing with some important health issues. Please discuss with your children the importance of washing their hands often. This will help in the reduction of illness at school and home. If your child is sick and coughing or sneezing, be sure to review the use of tissues and washing hands or hand sanitizer afterwards. Cough drops are no longer made available to students from the Nurse's Office. Students are allowed to bring cough drops from home, as long as they do not have medication in them. Parents willing to donate cough drops to the Nurse's Office is greatly appreciated.\
Fever:
We ask that you keep your child home if they have a temperature of 100.0 and higher and/or are vomiting. Giving a fever reducer and sending them to school exposes other students and will almost guarantee a call from school when the medication wears off. If your child is sent home from school with a fever they must remain home until they are fever free 24 hours without medications.
Lice:
Head lice screenings in the home are recommended as part of routine personal hygiene and will help identify an early, treatable condition. If you identify that your child has lice, please treat as soon as possible. T
he child must be brought back to school by a parent when lice treatment is completed (usually by the next day). The child will be checked by school staff and cleared to return to the classroom or provide further assistance.
Please remind your child to not share personal items (i.e. hat, scarfs, hair brush, comb).
Holiday Parties (P-5):
Please check with your child's teacher regarding food allergies. Certain classes are designated Peanut/Tree Nut/All Nut Free. All treats sent to school MUST be store bought with ingredient labels attached.
The Northern Kentucky Health Department has reported a few cases of confirmed Pertussis (Whooping Cough) in the Northern Kentucky area. Pertussis is a contagious disease that can be spread in settings where people are in close contact. The early cold-like symptoms of Pertussis progress to a persistent cough that won't go away and worsens with time, explosive bursts of coughing, vomiting after a coughing episode, a high pitched "woop" at the end of a coughing episode, and low grade fever. If your child exhibits any of these symptoms please contact your medical provider. We ask that you be on the alert to detect the early symptoms of the disease and take measures to prevent its transmission.
The best way to prevent Pertussis is by vaccination that is why it is important for us to have the proper, up to date immunization information for your child. The Northern Kentucky Health Department recommends the Tdap vaccine to adults who work in areas of close contact and parents of small children. This vaccine can be obtained from the health department for free, if your health care provider is unable to provide it. For more information, visit

Legacy Taekwondo
Be Assertive Boot Camp
Legacy Taekwondo is offering 2 months class enrollment for the price of 1 month, and a free uniform for any student from SVA participating in the Be Assertive Boot Camp organized by Rachel Mercer our school counselor. Legacy Taekwondo is a nearby, traditional Taekwondo school teaching students age 4-adult, that also offers competition and self-defense classes. Freshman Baseball
If your child will be attending Dixie Heights High School next year and is interested in trying out for the Freshmen Baseball Team, an informational meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 21st at 5:30 in the DHHS gym. Try outs will be held on Saturday, April 25th at 1:00 p.m. at the high school. Students trying out must bring with them a completed athletic packet. BASKETBALL
The SVA Royals Boys and Girls Basketball teams completed their seasons with last night being our final tournament game as the 8th lost in a tight game vs. Conner in the 2nd Round. Our teams all improved this season as there were many highlights throughout the season.
The All-Tournament Team included the following players from SVA:

All-Tournament Team members may attend the Finals on Saturdaywithout admission being charged.Just prior to the awarding of the runner-up and championship trophies, the entire All-Tournament Team including those representing the runner-up and championship teams should be announced. All-Tournament Team members that chose to attend the finals would be invited at that time to come on to the floor for their final recognition.
Congratulations to the All-Tournament Team as well as all of our players who played so hard this season in representing SVA!

CHEERLEADING
The competition team competed at BB&T Arena at NKU Saturday, February 28th. They came in
1st Place in the NKCCA Competition! Congratulations to our cheerleaders on a great season which included going to State for the first time in school history!

TRACK
Track interest meeting on Friday, February 10 at 2:30 in the cafeteria. Track practices will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays following tryouts in February. If you are interested in trying out for track, and haven't participated or tried out in athletics at SVA this school year, you will need to have an Athletic Packet with a physical and insurance before you can try out. Packets may be picked up in the gym Athletic Director's office in the gym. Track is open to student's grades 4-8.
VOLLEYBALL
Our annual volleyball clinic will be conducted in May this year instead of the summer for incoming 6
th-8

for the Council and District Levels at
Summit View Academy

Wednesday, February 22
from 6:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M in the 6-8 gym. The event is for 9-14 year old boys and girls. Age group will be determined by your age on January 1, 2017. The 9 year old divisions for boys and girls will begin shooting at approximately 6:45 P.M., and take approximately 20 minutes for each age group depending on the number of participants. Certificates will be given to each participant, and plaques will be given to the champion of the boy and girl in each age group. Register at the event when you arrive as registration will begin at 6:00 P.M. Enter through the Community Entrance under the Clock Tower. Winners will move on to the Regional event in late February. Regional winners will move on to the state championship in March.
The event is free for all participants and spectators, and participants may leave after their age group has completed shooting.

Dress Code
At Summit View Academy we rely upon a system of supervision and monitoring by staff and surveillance cameras to provide and maintain a safe school environment. All students attending SVA are required to follow the Dress Code. The Dress Code can be viewed by clicking the link below.

K-5 Enrichment Schedule
Classes in grades K-5 participate in enrichment classes using an A-E rotation schedule. Using this type of schedule ensures student receive equal instructional time in all enrichment classes. Enrichment classes will not be on a specific day of the week. They will be changing throughout the school year when school is not in session.
