Tri State Report
Rumble in the Bronx
New York, NY
Baruch College played host to the Rumble in the Bronx. TriStateReport was on hand to see who was gonna bring their "A" game to Manhattan. Keith Danzy and the Albany City Rocks staff put on a great event and I'm looking forward to next years event.
Ring City and New Heights closed out the opening nights action at the Rumble in the Bronx. The "Rematch", is how I described the game between Ring City and New Heights. Two weeks earlier Ring City put a twenty piece on New Heights at the HoopGroup Spring Jam Fest. It was good to see these teams go at it in a smaller venue where you can feel and hear the intensity of the two teams. Ring City as a team didn't have a great game but got key contributions at the right times. The strength of their bench will be key come July. During the rematch one thing was for sure, New Heights played a totally different game, competing to the very end only to come up short by three in overtime. They are going to be a scary team come July if they continue to mature the way they are.
Standouts from the event:
Maria Backman- 6'1- 2014
Maria is a problem! She was the key when New Heights was the most successful against Ring City. Running the offense through Maria allowed the rest of the team to freelance more because of her ability to see over the defense. Her ability to exploit defenses is only in the beginning phases. There is still some things to improve on that will help her become a dominant presence but the upside of having a player that can fill 3-4 positions is something that everyone wants.
Aliya Butts- 5'5- 2014
First time I saw her I was impressed. Aliya is a fiery competitor who is learning how to control the game. Aliya and I had a conversation after a game to discuss why is she always on the "go" without real purpose. The difference a couple weeks make. Her game was purposeful on Friday night as she set the tone for her teams run toward the championship. Aliya knew when to shoot, get her teammates involved and when to change the pace when they had nothing on transition. The Philly Freedom Stars have the ingredients for a great summer if they bring it all together.
Tyler Raysor- 6'1- 2014
The difference maker in the "Rematch"! It was Tyler's defense that help keep Jade Walker(6'2-2013) low offensive output. Tyler was physical and used some good footwork to make life difficult for Jade down low. Tyler had some timely buckets during the game to help keep her team in the game.
