June 2013
Letter from the Executive Director: Running Despite Adversity

by Eva Dunn-Froebig, Run Wild Missoula Executive Director

I have only run two marathons, but I faced challenges while training for both of them and those challenges made me feel stronger and feel more empowered to run. . .

But my challenges were nothing compared to those that Brian Boyle faced when he participated in the Ironman Triathlon about a year after he was in a tragic car accident in which every major organ in his body was damaged and doctors thought he wouldn't survive, let alone walk again. Click here to read Eva's article about Brian and running despite adversity.

Missoula Marathon: By The Numbers

by Vic Mortimer, Missoula Marathon Registration Director

MM Logo

2013 is the first year that entries for the Missoula Marathon, Half Marathon, and 5K were capped. The marathon hit its 1,500 entry limit in early May; as of Friday afternoon on May 31, the half marathon had 3,225 entries - just 275 entries from the cap of 3,500. Both totals are records. View From The Back: The Courage To Start Award

by Pam Gardiner, Leader, Back of the Pack

"The miracle is not that I finished, but that I had the courage to start." The Courage to Start is the title of Bingham's first book. It is also the title we have adopted as a new option for recognizing members of our inspiring Run Wild Missoula community. Click here to read the entire article.

Road Runners Club of America: Convention

by Run Wild Missoula Members Scott and Dara Rouse
Along with Executive Director Eva Dunn-Froebig we had the honor of representing RWM at the Road Runners Club of America national convention in Albuquerque, NM from May 2nd through May 5th. The convention was hosted by the Albuquerque Road Runners, which has 515 members. We tried to do a good job representing our club and our city. Click here for Scott and Dara's report.

Also, click here for a report on the speakers at the convention by John Devitt, the Montana State Representative. The RRCA website also has excellent information for all runners, including how to avoid race scams.

Diva Day October 12: Get Ready

by Sue Falsey, Diva Day Race Director

Registration for the Missoula All Women's 5K Run on Diva Day officially opens on June 1. Start planning: shoes, training, check check. Next to think about ...outfit...hmmmm, hair.. hmmmm, friends to run with..easy, family to bring..easy too. But get it going. This year we are limiting participants to 1,350. Last year we had 1,109 register, and we have been growing by a couple of hundred every year...so don't wait til the last day. Click here for more information and online registration.

We are also looking for a few good .. early volunteers. We're trying to make the event smoother, cleaner, greener, slicker, and more fun. We have a great team already but need a few more to complete the group. If you are organized, like arranging schedules and plans, contacting our expo participants, and getting up and out  at 6 am on Saturday Oct. 12 (at least with race supplied coffee,) you can volunteer as  the expo coordinator. Our sponsors and some others (food, kids table, face painters, photo booth) will have tables and equipment in or near one of the big white tents, and your job would be to coordinate with them: location, times, places, info they want presented to the participants, etc. It will require a couple of hours a week in August and September, then more time in early October to check in and keep everyone on time and on target. We will have a couple of coordinators' meetings in June/July just to get everyone working together. It's not super time consuming, but it is critical for you to be committed to keeping the task  going and to report on your progress. If you are interested, please contact  Sue.

Larger Than Life: Joanie

by Run Wild Missoula Member Pam Gardiner
"It was August 5, 1984. The Los Angeles Coliseum. Her mother hugged her and whispered, "Now you can stop." Other friends and supporters echoed the theme: You have made your mark on history, now you can move on. You have won the first-ever women's Olympic marathon. Now you can settle down. Relax. Rest on your laurels. Get a life. Joan Benoit saw it differently."

Aches & Pains With Increased Miles

by Kristi Moore, MSPT, Alpine Physical Therapy
As we are getting closer to the Missoula Marathon and many other long distance races in Montana, there are likely to be an increase in aches and pains with the increase in mileage. This can be especially true for beginning runners, but also for experienced runners after a long winter with decreased weekly mileage. This month I felt it would be beneficial to talk about some ways to help decrease the aches and pains, as well as when you should seek professional advice.
