Monthly Spotlight
When was the last time you did something for the first time?
|
Do you ever feel like you're running out of options. You're out of time. The clock is ticking. You don't know what else to do. The 5k race seems stale now, so passe. Running a 10K, is simply twice as boring as a 5k. Marathon? Been there, done that.
Don't let life get the best of you. Look outside of your comfort zone and try something new. There are many ways to spice up your running life, and I'm not only referring to a new race distance. We all need a swift kick in the pants to experience all life has to offer. Some people make bucket lists of life experiences, I make them of races or events I want to do. My Mom once asked me when I was going to be done doing all these race-things. I immediately thought...never. As soon as I tick one item off my bucket list and think "man, how am I going to top that", I learn about yet another bucket list worthy event. In this, our only life on Earth, make your list bold (unless you believe in reincarnation, but then again you might be a grasshopper next and your options will be very limited then).
How can you switch things up and be open to all your options out there?
Change up:
- race type - running, triathlon, track event, swim event
- race location - different country, trail vs. road,
- race challenge - 50 state club, marathon maniac or half fanatic
I like to think of life as 'running through my options'. My running/workout life has evolved from my first 5k race to marathons to triathlon to trying to master my inner speed demon to ultra swimming to ultra running to ultra triathlon, to bucket list race events to bucket list on-your-own runs, to ... who knows what's next. I don't know yet, but I do know that my options are nowhere near over. Speed, location, distance, sport, what will you decide?
If you need help testing out all of your option, we can help you! Try out our Track Meet in June or attempt a new distance triathlon and sign up for our Summer of Fun training programs. If those don't float your boat, come and talk to us at Blue Sky. We're all doing crazy fun stuff and are happy share in that with you!

Featured product
Sir Issac Newtons
No, we're not featuring a person, we're featuring Newton Running shoes! Why spotlight only one type of shoe you might ask? - go ahead and ask it... right now...go ahead...Because they're freaking awesome! Do you suffer from injuries? Do you tend to be a 'heel striker'? Have you forgotten how to run? If you think you might answer yes to any of these questions then you should try these shoes!
From the source itself: "The key to preventing running injuries is to run with lightweight shoes and
efficient, low-impact running form
. Running in heavy, overbuilt running shoes can put more strain on a runner’s body, reduce proprioception necessary to engage proper form and make a runner’s feet and lower legs overwork braking and propulsive muscles and connective tissue — a combination which can actually make a runner more prone to common overuse injuries." Couldn't have said it better myself which is why I didn't. Stop by the store slap these shoes on your feet and go for a run. You will be amaized (anyone get why I spelled it that way...?)

The Athletes' Plate
"
Chocolate comes from cocoa, which is a tree, that makes it a plant - chocolate is salad!"
It’s So Hot!
Yup, it’s Summer. It happens every year. And next Summer, guess what? Yes, it will be hot then too. So, while complaining about the heat does not make us a better athlete; the proper training, fueling and hydration does. Therefore, let’s focus what we can control (fueling/hydration/training) and not focus on what we cannot control (the temperature). All too often during a run, athletes focus primarily on pace per mile. Well an 8:00 mile in 50-degree weather, physiologically, is going to be quite different from an 8:00 mile in 100-degree weather.
STEP 1
Check the athletic ego at the door. In the heat (and all of the time for that matter), the key is to focus on the number that really matters, and that is heart rate.
In warmer weather, the body has to drive blood to the skin to try to keep the body cool. And at the same time, the body has to drive blood to the working muscles as well. What does all of this demand mean for the heart? Well, it’s pretty simple. This means that the heart has to beat faster. As a result, we are going to have a higher heart rate (at a slower pace) in warmer weather. And if we choose to be short-sighted and only follow pace (and not heart rate), the result may be subpar at best, if not a complete disaster and death-march to the finish
.
Step 2
Fuel the body before/during/after workouts. This is where energy gels and energy bars are a huge key to success. Consume a gel just prior to the start of your run and then every 3-4 miles during the run. And consume an energy bar (K II Kookie/Brownie Bar®) + 20-30oz water immediately post run to help refuel, reload muscle glycogen and enhance recovery.
STEP 3
Hydrate before/during/after you run. Consume 16-24 oz water before your run and consume 1-4 bottles of water (approximately 20oz/bottle) during the run, depending on the run duration. Let’s embrace the heat and maximize performance and recovery this summer by following the 3 key steps above. Workout Smart, Eat Right, Get Results®!

Bryant Kohut
please raise your hand, you're the WINNER! You've been kicking butt and taking names as you get ready to rock your Ironman Boulder (Colorado in case you were confused) race coming in June. And you started the Tri season with a bang as you not only PR'd (that means "personal record", not peed your pants) the Charleston Sprint Series race in May, but you also WON your age group. Clearly your Blue Sky kit made all the difference so in addition to taking partial credit for your win, we're going to give you a prize.
Stop by the store anytime in June and pick up your prize, you deserve it.
