             YLC Activities

YLC members helped with the Safe and Healthy Kids Fair on July 28th.

The theme for the Kids Fair was Frozen in July so the YLC members wanted to do Snow Cones and a Dunk Tank. These both went over very well on the warm July evening. The kids also gave snow flake temporary tattoos and shared information about the dangers of drugs, alcohol and tobacco.

Two YLC members attended the CADCA NYLI training in August in Indianapolis, IN. Emily Jester and Cheyenne Schmitter attended the week long training and came home with tools and information about how to change youth substance use in their community. To learn more about their experience you can read the article here---> Midyear Article

CADCA Midyear

The Van Buren County SAFE Coalition along with more than 1,500 substance abuse
prevention and treatment specialists from across the country convened in Indianapolis August 3rd - 6th for CADCA's 2015 Mid-Year Training Institute.

The week-long training, held at the JW Marriott, taught participants how to address one of our nation's biggest public health challenges - youth drug use.

CADCA sent the SAFE Coalition participants home, revved up and ready to implement new ideas as "Agents of Change" in Truth or Consequences, in Van Buren County, Iowa.

Kris Rankin learned a lot during the sessions she attended during the CADCA Mid-Year Training Institute. She attended sessions on Benefit: Cost Analysis of Substance Abuse Prevention; Engaging Law Enforcement; Affecting State and Local Policy Change; Creating Coalition Durability; Using Philanthropy to Maximize a Coalition's Development Strategy; and Substance Abuse the Common Thread in Public Health and Social Issues.
"The key that I walked away with is to work outside of the box.  We need to look at all the areas/ways that substance abuse affects the community and how when it  is prevented through the work of the coalition it saves the community money." Said Rankin

Iowa Partnership For Success Funds- Community Assessment
The SAFE Coalition is currently working on the Capacity phase of the IPFS (Iowa Partnership for Success) Grant. This requires the completion of a key document, the Capacity Workbook.

The Capacity Workbook requires the collection of information about the providers of prevention services in Van Buren County and how they do or do not work together.
Coalition members are working to collect the required information to complete this document and identify the work being done in the community related to underage drinking and underage binge drinking.  During this process the coalition also hopes to connect with other partners in the community to help build the capacity of the coalition to address underage drinking and underage binge drinking in Van Buren County.

The next steps for the IPFS Grant will be to use the data collected during the assessment phase
and the information from the capacity phase to identify local conditions and plan strategies to
make community change.

For more information on the Partnership for Success funds you may contact the coalition office at 319-293-6412 or via email at info@vbsafecoalition.com.
