SAFE Coalition works for Sustainability

The Van Buren County SAFE Coalition is working toward sustaining the work of the coalition. As the coalition moves into their 10th and final year of Drug Free Communities Funds they are looking at ways to sustain the work of the coalition.

Many coalition strategies have been built into the systems of the community as a part of the sustainability planning process, but there is still need for additional sustainability of the people and some of the projects that keep the coalition active. It has been shown that coalitions can not operate on volunteers alone.

The coalition is looking at additional sources of funding, local community support and foundations to help continue the work of the coalition and prevention in the county.

There have been some remarkable accomplishments due in part to the work of the coalition and it would be unfortunate to see this great work end because grant money ends.

If you would like more information on the sustainability process, would like to get involved or have ideas for local sustainability of coalition efforts we would love to hear from you, please call 319-293-6412 or email

Parent/Athlete Team Meetings- Van Buren
The Van Buren Community Schools in conjunction with the Van Buren County SAFE Coalition are holding Parent/Athlete Team Meetings. These meetings are intended to set expectations for Van Buren Warrior athletes and parents for the upcoming sports season. Greg Jones, athletic director, will be covering a variety of topics some of which include; sportsmanship, sleep, nutrition, code of conduct, and parent expectations just to name a few. At the conclusion of Mr. Jones's presentation the coaches will hold their individual team meetings to go over sport specific rules, information and schedules.

The meeting is being held in conjunction with the start of the sports season and Meet The Warriors night. There will be athletic scrimmages, and a tailgate dinner in addition to the meeting.
When: Friday, August 22nd
Time: 6:00pm
Location: VB High School Gym

These meetings will be held three times per year at the start of the Fall, Winter and Spring/Summer sports seasons. All parents and athletes are expected to attend these meetings in order to obtain the valuable information and sign off on the required forms.
