             YLC Activities

During the Month of January YCL members were busy bringing awareness to a variety of Substance Abuse issues.
National Drug Facts Week was held January 27 through 31st and activities were held at both the Van Buren and Harmony School Districts as well as out in the community. The students wanted to shatter the myths related to the use of Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco no only with their peers but with younger students and community members. They wanted to make them aware of the dangers and consequences associated with using these substance. A full listing of Youth Activities and Pictures can be found by linking here:

Youth are remaining active for the remainder of the year by working on Prevention Videos, planning smoke-free zone presentations, preparing for Through with Chew Week in February, Kick Butts Day in Mach and Alcohol Awareness Month in April

Through with Chew Week
February 24-28th
Van Buren County Youth Leadership Council Members along with ISTEP council of Iowa will be bringing awareness to the dangers of chewing tobacco during Through With Chew week.
This year youth have come up with a variety of activities that will take place in their school in community that outline the dangers of using Spit tobacco. Youth feel that spit tobacco is seen as a safer alternative to smoking cigarettes and they want to dispel this myth. In order to accomplish this they plan to do the following: have a booth during lunches next week with Mr Gross Mouth, Chew Facts, Billy Bob teeth and duct tape.
 Drug Free Communities Grant Renewal
The Van Buren County SAFE Coalition completed and submitted their year 10 Drug Free Communities Support Program Application. This is a non-competitive renewal process that the coalition must complete each year.  This will be the final year for the Drug Free Communities Funds and the coalition will be looking at additional means of sustainability beyond the DFC grant.
The coalition board has developed a sustainability committee that will look at options for moving forward and how to retain the great work of the coalition that has occurred in the last nine years with the funding that was provided.

SAFE Coalition and YLC members gain new skills at the CADCA National Leadership Forum
The Van Buren County SAFE Coalition and YLC members (Ginger Shaw, Cassie Johnson and Faith Murphy) who attended the CADCA National Leadership Forum February 3rd-6th brought back many new skills they hope to implement in Van Buren County.
During their time in Washington D.C. members attended SAMHSA's National Prevention Day where they learned about the science of marijuana use and the brain; Day on the Hill where they met with representatives from Senator Grassley, Senator Harkin, and Representative Loebsack's Offices; and attended many informative sessions on different substance abuse prevention topics.  The Youth and Adults both learned skills they can employ to work against legalization of marijuana not only in Van Buren County but also in the state of Iowa.  They are now armed with the information to clearly communicate with the community and elected officials about the dangers of marijuana.  The youth especially want to address marijuana use in Van Buren County.   During the National Youth Leadership Initiative Cassie and Faith came up with a plan that they hope to implement that will address The use of marijuana in the community.
