             YLC Activities

YLC members had the opportunity to engage with elected officials during the month of February along with planning for their spring events.
On February 26th seven VBYLC members visited the State Capitol for AC4C's Day on the Hill. The theme for this years event was "Do What's Best for Iowa Youth". The YLC members attended a training to learn proper etiquette when speaking to elected officials. The youth then transferred to the capitol together for a press conference. Van Buren County's Lydia Heald was one of the featured speakers during the press conference. Heald spoke about the importance of reducing youth access to alcohol and how she has seen first hand the devastation that alcohol can cause. After the press conference the youth were able to speak to their elected officials about the importance of the work they are doing in their community with YLC. The youth expressed their appreciation for the continued support of the elected officials and how they are important to the work done locally in the community. YLC members spoke with both Representative Hanson and Senator Chelgren about the issues of Underage Drinking and Youth Marijuana Use.
YLC members have been spending many hours planning for spring events to be held over the next couple of months. Kick Butts Day is March 19th- students from both Van Buren and Harmony have been working to prepare messages about the dangers of Tobacco use as well as looking at local tobacco-free policies and how these can be strengthened. April is Alcohol awareness month and all YLC members will be involved in this in some way, activities and events are still being planned but you will no doubt see them around the school and community!

SAFE Director, Heidi Bainbridge, has been meeting with Alcohol Merchants during the month of March. The purposes of these visits is to provide the merchants with an updated list of staff who are current in the Merchant Training, update information in their red binder, provide new drivers license id books and be a resource if the business is in need of anything related to liquor laws.
Just a reminder to businesses: The coalition recommends three steps for training employees:

2) VB SAFE Merchant Training
