2014-15 SAFE Home Pledges

The Van Buren County SAFE Coalition completed the SAFE Home Pledge again this year in the Van Buren School District at both the Elementary and High School

SAFE Home pledges have been incorporated into the registration process and parents complete the form as they register their students for school. Parents who do not complete a form are sent a letter asking if they would like to be removed from the directory. Once all parents have been contacted and the pledge directory is finalized a link will be placed on the SAFE website for parents to access the directory with a login and password.

The intent of the directory is to provide a resource and network for parents of other parents in the school district who are pledging to keep their home free of alcohol for teens. They pledge that they will not serve alcohol to teens, will not allow parties in their home and will be aware of the whereabouts of their children. IF your child is visiting the home of a friend you can use the directory to reach out to the parents to make sure they know your child is coming and if you can provide any soda or chips for a gathering!

If you have any questions about the SAFE home pledge or would like to sign a pledge you can get more information on the Pledge Website or by calling or emailing the coalition: -319-293-6412 or

Social Host Law
Iowa's new Social Host Law went into effect on July 1st, 2014.
Do you know what this means for you?

A Social Host is someone who provides a place for underage drinking to occur, this means any property you own- a home, apartment, field, car or boat.

The SAFE Coalition along with Iowa's Alliance of Coalitions for Change worked to develop an FAQ document to help residents better understand what the Social Host means for them. Please refer to the links below for a copy of the legislation as well as an FAQ document about the law.

If you want additional information about the new law you may contact the SAFE Coalition by phone at 319-293-6412 or via email at

Details are still in the works as more information becomes available the coalition will work to get the information out to partners and community members.
Additional information about medicine abuse and how you can get involved can be found on the Stop Medicine Abuse Website. If you are interested in getting involved with this initiative or want more information you can contact the coalition office at 319-293-6412 or via email at
