             YLC Activities  

YLC members have been involved in a couple of Summer activities during the month of June. They will also be assisting with the Safe and Healthy Kids Fair on July 28th.

 

Two YLC members attended the ISTEP Summit in Fairfield on Friday, June 26th. Jacinta Wenke and Ciery Welcher were both a part of this event where they learned how to make a difference in their community and took part in a lot of fun activities during the day that helped them to build their leadership skills.

 

On Saturday, June 28th Hannah Sprouse and McKenzie Winslow helped at the Parents As Teachers Car Seat Safety Checks- they provided face painting for young children that came with their parents to have their car seats checked by a trained technician.

 

Two YLC members have been selected to attend the CADCA NYLI training in August in Indianapolis, IN. Congratulations to Emily Jester and Cheyenne Schmitter for being selected for this event! They will be traveling to Indiana with Youth Coordinators Heidi Bainbridge and Melissa Daugherty as well as IPFS Coordinator Kris Rankin.

Youth Development Grant   


 

The Van Buren County SAFE Coalition submitted their application for the Iowa Department of Public Health's Youth Development grant on June 16th, a copy of the application is on file in the board office.

 

The purpose of this grant is to provide health services to include evidence based prevention programming for youth ages 5-18 including out of school youth development, opportunities for character development, youth development and leadership.

The goals of the project include:

1. Reduce substance abuse of school age youth in Iowa.

2. Increase youth development skills, leadership skills and character development and provide opportunities to practice those skills in meaningful ways.

3. To increase the number of adults who demonstrate youth development practices to enhance community climate to support positive youth development.

 

The Van Buren County SAFE Coalition wrote their application to continue the work of the Youth Leadership Council as well as to implement the program Alcohol Edu for Freshmen.

 

The announcement regarding the receipt of these funds is scheduled for July 10th.

Iowa Partnership For Success Funds- Community Assessment

The IPFS (Iowa Partnership for Success) Grant is currently completing the Community Assessment phase of the project. This required the completion of two key documents, the Community Assessment Workbook (CAW) and the Tri-Ethnic Readiness Survey.

 

 

The Community Assessment workbook requires the collection of a variety of data from a variety of sources, some of this is qualitative and some quantitative. Coalition members worked to collect the required data to complete this document and identify the local conditions in the community related to underage drinking and underage binge drinking. The coalition held focus groups the first week of June for community members to provide additional information about the concerns that they have about underage drinking in the community.

 

The Tri-Ethnic Community Readiness Survey requires the coalition to complete 12 interviews with members of the community to gauge their readiness to address the issue of underage drinking. These interviews have now all been completed and are scored by coalition members. The final report for this document has been submitted along with the final CAW.

    

The next steps for the IPFS Grant after assessment will be capacity building and planning. Coalition staff attended a webinar on the deliverables for these steps on June 25th and received the Capacity Workbook to be completed by September 8th. This information will be shared with coalition members at the July coalition meeting.

Merchant Trainings
The  SAFE Coalition held merchant trainings in June for the entire county as well as a training in Farmington for businesses in that area of the county. There were 6 employees from 3 businesses in attendance for these trainings.  The next merchant trainings will be held in August for any business in the county who has employees who need to be trained.
 
August Trainings are scheduled for:
August 18th- 6pm
August 19th- 9am
