Kick Butts Day

Kick Butts Day on March 18, 2015 is about getting involved in activities so American youth can raise awareness about the tobacco problem, encourage peers to be tobacco free and support effective solutions to reduce tobacco use. Every day more than 3,000 kids under 18 try smoking for the first time and 700 kids become new regular daily smokers. Tobacco use is still the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., killing more than 480,000 people every year.

That is why Van Buren Middle School YLC 8th graders are participating in Kick Butts Day by doing fun activities to show awareness. To learn more about the YLC activities-------> click here

Parent Teacher Conferences

The Van Buren SAFE Coalition would like to encourage you to take the time to attend Parent-Teacher Conferences in March at your son or daughter's school. Being involved in your adolescent's educational upbringing is just as important when they're in middle school and high school as it is when they are younger. While you rely more on them to communicate with you as they get older about the happenings at school, it's through discussions with their teachers that you get a better understanding of not just their grades but how they interact in the classroom, which can clue you in to other issues your son or daughter may be dealing with in their school or personal settings.

Everyone is busy. Everyone has other things to do. It can be hard to find the time to get to conferences, but the message you send your child by attending is invaluable! Their education is important and taking an active role shows you care. Studies show that parents are the most influential person in a teen's life. Having a good relationship with your adolescent will go a long way in helping them navigate the tough decisions they face and the challenges they must endure in the process of growing up. So again, we encourage you to support your child by attending conferences. It really is the little things that add up to make the biggest difference.

A few things to note about conference this year at the Middle/High School:

  • Dates are: Monday, March 16th PK-12th grade, Tuesday, March 17th PK-6th grade & Thursday, March 19th 7th- 12th grade.
  • A Transition Night will be held on March 16th from 6:30-7:30 pm at the Middle/High School.
  • A Parent/Athlete Team Meeting will be held March 16th from 5:30-6:30 pm at the Middle/High School.
  • A free will donation meal will be available at the Middle/High School on March 16th from 5pm-7pm, all proceeds go toward CAPS Council.

Iowa Partnership For Success Funds
The SAFE Coalition received information in February regarding the receipt of Iowa Partnership For Success Funds (IPFS). These funds will help the coalition to continue to address the issue of underage and binge drinking in Van Buren County.

Kris Rankin has taken the position of the grant coordinator and Heidi Bainbridge will serve as the supervisor for this project. The grant began in February of 2015 and will last though September of 2019, as funds are available.

The first phase of this project is to dig in and do an assessment of the community. The coalition will be using the next few months to gather data to better help them understand the problem of underage drinking and binge drinking in Van Buren County.

The coalition will also be working to build their capacity of community volunteers to assist in these initiatives. It is important that the coalition has key players from all sectors of the community help address this issue. Coalition members may be reaching out to you to garner your support and encourage your involvement in this partnership.

There are a variety of trainings required for this project, Kris, Heidi and Coalition members will be participating in these opportunities to learn more about the process and ensure we are implementing the most effective strategies for our community.

For more information on the Partnership for Success funds you may contact the coalition office at 319-293-6412 or via email at
