SAFE represents more than 900 of the industry's top aviation educators in 49 states and nine foreign countries, including the majority of Master Instructors and numerous General Aviation Awards winners in all four awards categories. SAFE developed and is now offering Regional Pilot Proficiency Projects across the U.S.

Sun 'n Fun Wrap-up

SAFE's presence at Sun 'n Fun 2015 was made possible by four long-time supporters of our organization. Aviation Insurance Resources and Starr Companies underwrote the cost of the SAFE breakfast this year. Gleim and Sporty's provided sign-up bonuses to every new and renewing SAFE member. A sincere thank you to these SAFE supporters.

Another thank you, this one to SAFE members who volunteered to work at the SAFE tent. Nine folks helped throughout the week - Mike Garrison, Lonnie Hilkemeier, Don Knight, Frank Szachta, Jack Vandeventer, Al Van Lengen, Bill Wilson, Dennis Wilt, and Donna Wilt. A special shout out to Dennis Wilt who performed above and beyond the call of duty.

Several media outlets helped us spread the word regarding SAFE. Florida Aviation Network (www.floridaaviationnetwork.com) has archived our video interview making it available on their You Tube channel. IMC Radio helped share the SAFE story through their Plane Talk radio program. Welcome to the more than 50 new and renewing SAFE members who joined SAFE during the event.

AirVenture -- aka, "OSHKOSH!"

Planning is well underway for SAFE's participation at AirVenture 2015. The SAFE exhibit has relocated to booths 2093/2094 in Exhibit Hangar B. A new location, new exhibit, and new focus will increase the level of excitement for this year's event. Prior to the organization's annual dinner will be a board meeting and the annual membership meeting. These events will all occur Thursday, July 23, in the Wittman Regional Airport terminal, street address is 525 East 20th Avenue, Oshkosh.

We are seeking SAFE members who will volunteer to "work the booth" for a half-day. The first two members to sign up for a work period - either AM or PM, on any given day, will earn a daily admission pass for that day.

Visit the SAFE website and click on the AirVenture 2015 banner to volunteer, sign up for the SAFE banquet, and learn the details of both the annual membership and board meetings.

Board Elections

SAFE Governance Committee members are in the midst of interviewing nominees for SAFE's 2015 board candidates.  Three of these nominees will be elected by you, the SAFE membership. They, and six other previously elected directors, will lead the organization for the next three years.

Board candidate introductions will be posted on the SAFE website beginning on May 21. All members are encouraged to learn more about each of the candidates. Elections will begin on Monday, June 1 and the polls will be open for 10 days. Each SAFE member will receive an email describing the on-line voting process. Election information and voting reminders will be available through our website, FaceBook, and Twitter feeds.

The SAFE Resource Center Wants Your Educational Materials!
The Resource Center at safepilots.org would like to expand its selection of teaching media. Most of the excellent papers, teaching tools, PowerPoints and videos have been created by our members in the course of their work as aviation educators. The Resource Center makes these tools available to all fellow members. Please consider taking a few minutes to submit your materials to us.  In particular, we are in need of media for topics including Navigation, Performance, and Regulations.

The SAFE Resource Center is one of the many benefits of YOUR membership! For access to the full array of instructional tools, visit

SAFE Teacher Grants 2015

SAFE is again providing two K-12 Classroom Teacher Grants this year. The grants are designed to encourage teachers to incorporate aviation-themed lessons into their normal curriculum. Applications must be submitted by August 31, 2015 and funds used within one year of the award.

Are you a K-12 teacher, STEM coordinator or member of a homeschooling cooperative? Maybe you know of such a person. We encourage these educators to download the grant application and email the completed form to [email protected]

VFRGPS Procedures
New eNews Sponsor!

Flying a VFR traffic pattern to an unfamiliar runway will be as easy as connecting the dots thanks to VFRGPS Procedures LLC. These folks have developed a standardized VFR traffic pattern to more than 13,500 runways across the United States. Use of these procedures, will provide pilots 3-D preflight planning benefits as well as moving map (lateral) guidance from the enroute phase to touchdown.

Now it is time for beta testing and this is where SAFE members come in. Needing to validate the benefits of their product, VFRGPS Procedures is seeking aviation instructors and other pilots with Android and PC experience to participate in a beta test beginning May 1, 2015. The testing period will conclude Aug 18, 2015. Serving as a test candidate provides you full access to more than 13,500 GPS Arrival Procedures and 3-D Preflight Planning Files. Users of Android devices will be able to begin testing immediately. Expected roll out of the iOS-based program will occur shortly.

Visit VFRGPS Procedures (www.vfrgps.com) and view the introductory video on their VFR Procedures concepts and instructions on how to become a beta tester.

Correction

Back in the February issue of the eNewsletter we announced a new SAFE program - the SAFE Ambassador. We shared how you could become a SAFE Ambassador and serve at local aviation events. The only problem was the phone number we provided was incorrect. The correct number to reach JoAnn Hill and learn about the SAFE Ambassador Program is (303) 485-8136.
