Road Safety Assessments:

The Importance of Non-Motorized Users


This training opportunity will provide participants with the skills necessary to assemble an Road Safety Assessment (RSA) team, conduct an RSA and prioritize and mitigate any safety issues the RSA may uncover. The importance of integrating consideration for bicyclists and pedestrians in an RSA process, will be the focus of the class.

Who Should Attend

 

This class is designed for any local or state transportation or public safety professionals involved in making decisions regarding the safety of their transportation network. Engineers, Public Works Directors, Highway Supervisors, Planners, Legal Traffic Authorities (LTA's), Police Chiefs, Traffic Officers and other law enforcement personnel are encouraged to attend.

This class includes a field exercise that will allow you to put into practice what is learned during the classroom portion of the workshop. Please bring a safety vest and wear comfortable shoes for this portion of the program.
 
Participants will receive 6 credit hours towards their CT Safety Champion Designation.
Course Instructor

 

Anthony A. Lorenzetti, P.E. is the Safety Circuit Rider at the University of Connecticut's Technology Transfer Center. He has over 30 years of professional engineering experience including both public and private sector employment. He served as the Public Works Director/Town Engineer for the Town of Plymouth, Connecticut for over 20 years.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this class, participants will be able to:
  • Understand how Road Safety Assessments (RSA's) serve as an effective tool to help reduce injuries and fatalities on your transportation network.
     
  • Understand basic road safety assessment concepts, including risk, safety, and common issues.
     
  • Gain experience in conducting road safety assessments integrating Non-Motorized Users.
     
  • Learn how low cost safety improvements can be implemented to help reduce the number of traffic fatalities and severe injury crashes.
