Marvelous March a
t
SAGES
What an exciting time of year it is for our students and staff! To celebrate National Agriculture Day, our students are doing something new this year. Rather than bringing our wonderful and knowledgeable learning partners on-site, our students will be going to visit different agricultural businesses on March 20.
Celebration and reward also come in March for completing the long stretch of learning opportunities in the form of Spring Break. Spring Break is from Friday, March 23 through Sunday, April 1. School will resume on April 2.
SAGES is happy to announce that the transition process is beginning over Spring Break in order for the south wing to be open. As you know, the south wing has been under construction at SAGES all year in order to build the media center addition and renovate classrooms; our new teaching kitchen will be open as well. Starting the 2018-2019 school year, music and art will be in the new south wing; however, for the remainder of this school year, Mrs. Plier, Mrs. Berry, and Ms. Godshall will temporarily move to the remodeled wing.
We are looking to feature the new south wing at several upcoming events including our
4K Preview Night in April and our May Community Night. Stay tuned for more information!

All students must be accompained by a parent or guardian.
Also, in honor of National Agriculture Week, canned goods will be collected. Students will recieve a raffle ticket for every can they bring.

Learners Expand Literacy Skills through Title 1 Efforts
|
|
Being a Title 1 school means that SAGES receives federal funding for extra instructional services based on the number of low income families being served by our school. At SAGES, we use our Title 1 funding for additional reading and writing services for all students. Mrs. Plier is our Title 1 reading teacher.
Title 1 teachers design reading programs that involve children in a variety of learning environments, encouraging positive experiences with reading and writing throughout the day. For example, when the 1st graders made “Stone Soup” from our garden goodies, the 4th graders buddied with the 1st graders to read and perform several versions of “Stone Soup” readers theaters, poems and stories together.
Recently, the 4th grade students worked closely with the 3rd grade students by helping them learn to write text dependent essays. This multi-age cooperation is another way for our students to be better prepared for success on the Forward Exam.
Also, in Agriculture classes, Mrs. Plier has helped 4th, 5th and 6th grade students research and write essays about “Inventions that Make Agriculture Great” for a contest sponsored by the Wisconsin Farm Bureau. These are all examples of ways that teachers are enriching literacy experiences for students through the Title 1 program.
Parent involvement is also a very important piece of a Title 1 school. Mrs. Plier often works with parents to help strengthen their child’s literacy learning both at home and at school. If you have any questions, or want to be more involved with literacy learning at home or at school, never hesitate to contact

SAGES' 4K Celebrates Dr. Seuss's Birthday
|
During the last week in February, students in 4K did an author study on Dr. Seuss. Aside from reading a variety of Dr. Seuss books that week, we did a number of extension activities that tied to each story we read.
After reading
The Foot Book
, we did the Hokey Pokey and had fun wiggling our bodies! We sorted and graphed colored Goldfish crackers after reading
One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish
. We even made green eggs and ham for our snack on the day we read
Green Eggs and Ham
. Most of the students who were brave enough to try the eggs thought they were quite delicious!
We had so much fun celebrating Dr. Seuss' creativity and imagination as we looked at many of his stories in class.

SAGES Families are Welcomed and Needed in Many Ways
|
|
For Input...
The Waupun Area School District is seeking input on our plan for the use of federal funding under the Every Student Succeeds Act. We ask you to take time to provide your thoughts around four questions in this brief survey. As the plan is written and revised, there will be further opportunities for stakeholder input.
SAGES Governance Board is accepting biographies/resumes from individuals interested in running for a membership position on the board. Materials are due to President Kathy Jenswold by April 10. To learn more about the responsiblities and structure of the Governance Board, please contact President
Jenswold.
For Donations....
With the remodeled south wing ready to open in the next few weeks, we are in need of good sized packing boxes. The east wing will be under construction for the remainder of the year, so we have classrooms and spaces to packup! Please feel free to bring any good size moving boxes to the SAGES office.
For Spreading the word about SAGES!
As part of our enrollment campaign, we have designed lots of new advertising materials to promote all of the wonderful educational opportunities at SAGES. If you are interested in getting a FREE yard sign to display in your window or yard, please

Partnering Provides Many Positive Outcomes
|
|
Meet SAGES' Learning Partner
is a NEW monthly segment showcasing the valuable people, businesses, and groups who contribute to the success of our school.
David Laatsch, a.k.a., the
“Chicken Man,”
is a retired High School Agriculture Instructor, UW-Extension agent, and lifelong Poultry Farmer. Since SAGES began, Mr. Laatsch has shared his agricultural knowledge and enthusiasm for chickens in numerous ways!
In 2014, he mentored our student “chicken team” helping plan and build SAGES’ chicken coop and generously loans chickens from his flock each fall/spring allowing learners to experience animal science & responsibility first-hand. He’s also provided eggs to incubate and served as a presenter at several SAGES’ learning events.
Thank you, Mr. Laatsch, for being an
“egg-cellent”
community learning partner!
