Groundbreaking Celebrates New Beginning for Wounded Vet in Tucson

SAHBA Members Build Specially Adapted ‘Smart’ Home, Donated by Gary Sinise Foundation
The
Gary Sinise Foundation
broke ground May 17 for its specially adapted smart home in Tucson for a severely wounded veteran. Like Gary Sinise’s character Lieutenant Dan in Forrest Gump,
US Army SFC Caleb Brewer
(Ret.) lost both legs while serving his country—in Afghanistan on his 31
st
birthday in 2015. Within four months, he relearned to walk with prosthetic legs and since then learned to surf, shoot, rock climb, and even completed the Army 10 Miler and the Bataan Memorial Death March. As a tribute to his endurance and resilience, Brewer, his wife Ashley and their two young daughters will receive this ‘forever home’ completely free, thanks to the Foundation’s R.I.S.E. program (Restoring Independence Supporting Empowerment), generous donors and in-kind partners, including the
National Association of Home Builders
.
Two SAHBA members are heavily involved in the project.
Architect Hank Krzysik
designed the custom home, fully modified with technology, mobility devices, adapted appliances and features to simplify tasks of everyday life for the family.
Hayes Construction, Inc.
(Tom, Suzie and Andrew Hayes and crew) will build the home.

Heads Up - Tucson Impact Fees
By Shawn Cote, SAHBA's Government Affairs Director
In 2014, the Tucson City Council a
dopted
new
impact fee studies
which
resulted in
significant increases to the total fee schedule
.
At that time, SAHBA engaged legal counsel and an impact fee consultant to highlight various potential statutory concerns with the approved studies
as well
as
highlight the adverse impact such a fee increase would have on housing starts. As a result, the City did not implement the full increase and maintained fees at the existing level. This was expected to be a one-time delay. However, o
ver the next three years, SAHBA was successful in encouraging Mayor and Council to take action to
delay
implementing the full
fee increases.
In a recent meeting, City Manager Mike Ortega informed
SAHBA that
he will be recommending to Mayor Rothschild and City Council that they do not delay the increase again, thereby allowing the previously adopted full amount to be charged. Should Mayor and Council follow his recommendation,
impact fees will increase effective July 01, 2018
.
