Move Your Bus
By Ron Clark
Reviewed by James Hutchins, Head of The Donoho School, Anniston, AL

We all remember the Flintstones ... right? Fred, Wilma, Pebbles, Barney, Betty, Bam Bam, and their energetic pet dinosaur, Dino. In the opening of each show, Fred screams, "Yabba Dabba Doo" and slides down the back of a dinosaur and lands in his prehistoric, wood and rock car that's powered by his feet. He paddles his way through the town of Bedrock, gathers up the family and the Rubbles, and collectively they run their feet as hard as they can and head to the movies. It took them, together, generating enough energy to move the car down the road. Well, Dino actually was a rider. He didn't contribute any to the ride. He enjoyed it while the others worked.  >>Read more.

Chemistry teacher Kari Newman from Durham Academy, Durham, NC, has been named a recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching - the highest commendation bestowed by the U.S. government on K-12 science teachers. She was recognized along with 212 other recipients in Washington, DC, on September 8.  Award winners, who were selected from a pool of state finalists by a National Science Foundation-appointed panel of prominent mathematicians, scientists and educators, received a $10,000 award from NSF to be used at their discretion, as well as professional development activities and opportunities to visit with the President's Administration.  The 2016-2017 school year marks Newman's 17th year of teaching chemistry at Durham Academy. She is head coach of the school's Science Olympiad team and has served as a lead class advisor, a mentor to new faculty, and a partner to seasoned teachers in the school's professional growth program.

Atlanta's Springmont School has teamed up with Play Me Again Pianos to put art and music in public spaces. Spearheaded by Springmont Art Teachers Theresa Dean and Courtney Denis, Springmont students and alumni painted a piano that was donated to the Woodruff Arts Center on Sunday, August 21, 2016. "Carly," as the piano is known, has a monarch motif to pay homage to the school's Monarchs to Mexico program.  Classrooms, from toddler to middle school, created monarchs in art classes and studied the monarch migration throughout the curricula. Older students swapped letters with students at El Rosario Telesecundaria and Vicente Guerrero Elementary schools in Mexico. Play Me Again Pianos is a nonprofit organization started by Kelly and Jason Brett, Springmont parents. They are placing 88 freely accessible public pianos throughout metro Atlanta.

Stephen P. Robinson Collaboration Grants

The Stephen P. Robinson Collaboration Grants were created to encourage independent schools to form new partnerships with other schools, institutions of higher education, businesses, and/or nonprofits. SAIS will annually divide a total of $25,000 among two to five member schools. Those applying must demonstrate a vision and capacity to pursue and carry out meaningful collaborations. Successful examples have demonstrated efforts that benefit the greater community or region in unique ways. SAIS will accept proposals for the 2017 Collaboration Grants between October 1 and December 31, 2016. Awards will be announced and disbursed by February 1, 2017.    >>Read more about the Collaboration Grants Program.
