Dear Families,
Happy Advent! Advent is in full swing here at Saint Andrew! I love this season in the Church calendar. Our amazing team of teachers and staff on the Advent Committee has gone all-out in bringing this season to life on our campus. Our Advent wreath greets all the students as they walk in the front doors.
Our students read an Advent prayer and share a suggested Advent "action" during our school-wide daily morning prayers. The Girl Scouts have our Advent trees in the front hallway already accepting donations for our Holiday Outreach program. Our Advent poster is displayed in the cafeteria covered in "spiritual uplifting post-its" serving as a reminder for our students of the true meaning of the season. I pray that this Advent season is one of reflection and prayer for your families as we prepare our hearts for Christ's birth.
Only By His Grace,
Veronica Tucker

FROM THE PRESIDENT - TRADITION
|
|
The Advent wreath has been a long-standing tradition in the Catholic faith. The wreath was adopted by Christians during the Middle Ages and attained a more f
ormal status by the church in the early 1600s. The vegetative parts of the wreath such as the evergreens, laurels, pine cones, nuts or seed pods cover many themes such as continuous life, victory over persecution and suffering, immortality of the soul, strength and healing, eternity of God, everlasting life found in Christ, life and resurrection.
The four candles represent the four weeks of Advent. The purple candles represent the prayer, penance and preparatory sacrifices and good works undertaken at this time. The rose candle represents rejoicing. The light of the candles represents the light of Christ. Various prayers are said for each candle as the candles are traditionally lit prior to dinner.
The Advent wreath is a great way to bring the family together and prepare for the coming of Christ.

We are thrilled when we have parents, grandparents and other special guests join us for Mass. We want to take this opportunity to review etiquette in the sanctuary. Whether in the main portion of the church or in the choir loft, we want to be sure all are setting the proper example for church behavior. Please no Starbucks drinks, other beverages, chewing gum, etc. in the choir loft. Please also refrain from excessive talking and flash photography. Some
visitors and students have been distracted by these behaviors. We spend a great deal of time in the classroom discussing proper behavior with our
students. We are so proud of their conduct and reverence while at weekly Mass. We appreciate your help in these important lessons.
Please join us tomorrow, Wednesday November 30th, at 9:00am
as we celebrate the Feast of St. Andrew, our namesake.

WHAT IS A PLENARY INDULGENCE?
|
Did you know that you would complete almost all of the requirements for a plenary indulgence by attending Mass at a church on its feast day?
First, what is a plenary indulgence? It is the removal of the punishment for your sins up until this time. When you go to Confession, your sins are forgiven but a plenary indulgence removes the punishment for those sins as well. To receive the plenary indulgence, you need to: a) go to Confession in the days before or after, b) receive Communion, c) pray for the intentions of the Pope and d) recite the Our Father and the Creed.
If you come to Mass at Saint Andrew on his feast day (Wednesday, November 30th), you will complete all of the plenary indulgence requirements outside of Confession.
Plan to attend the school Mass at 9:00am or daily Mass at 8:00!

Every year, our school donates
brand new items such as socks, hats, gloves, underwear and fleece blankets to Social Ministries which is now called Food Pantry Outreach. They then give these items to families in need. Many of the families will use the items as Christmas presents.
While you are out shopping over the Thanksgiving break please consider buying some of these items to donate to this great cause. They are in need of boys and girls items size 12 and under.
The Advent trees will be in the front foyer when you return from Thanksgiving break and we will collect items until December 13th.
This Thanksgiving, let us be thankful for all the blessings in our lives and help us to be a blessing to others!
Thank you to the following Girl Scout troops for donating the trees!
