News for the Parents of Saint Andrew Catholic School
November 14, 2017
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Families,

Next week, we celebrate Thanksgiving. The word, "thanksgiving", according to dictionary.com, means
"the act of giving thanks; grateful acknowledgment of benefits or favors, especially to God".

Christians of all denominations praise God and give thanks.  For Catholics, this thanksgiving to God is at the heart of the most important thing we do. This happens in the Eucharist. It is no mistake that "eucharist" translates to "the giving of thanks". As Americans, we remember that first meal shared between the Pilgrims and the Native Americans at Plymouth Rock after the arrival of the Mayflower almost 400 years ago. As Catholics, we remember that final meal shared between Jesus and his Apostles in the Upper Room before He was handed over to be crucified over 2,000 years ago. For both of these meals, we remain eternally grateful.

Only By His Grace,
Veronica Tucker

ADVENT TREES
Every year at Christmas time Advent trees are placed in the front hallway of our school and students fill the branches with items for families in need.  This year the items we donate will go to serve several programs at Catholic Charities Fort Worth, specifically the children and families involved with the Gabriel Project. The Gabriel Project is a ministry that reaches out to women currently going through and also after a crisis pregnancy.

The holiday season is an amazing time of year, one for joy & reflection, but without the support of family & friends and without the ability to meet basic necessities, it can also be a really t ough tim e for many people throughout the Diocese and across the country. Through donation drives like ours, Catholic Charities is able to help more of those in need and provide a joyous holiday season that otherwise would not happen.

Items we are collecting include:

Tree #1 - Toys & stuffed animals
    (Balls,Trucks,Dolls,Small Stuffed animals)
One piece, no assembly, no batteries)

Tree #2 -Bottles, Bibs, burp cloths

Tree #3 - kids clothes ( up to 12yrs)

Tree #4 - Socks and underwear

While you are out shopping over the Thanksgiving break please consider buying some of these items to donate to this great cause.  The Advent trees will be in the front foyer when you return from Thanksgiving break and we will collect items until Friday, December 8th.

We will also collect gently used coats, both children and adult sizes.

MARIAN STATUES
The Spiritual Life Committee at Saint Andrew Catholic School offers two blessed statues to its families:  A statue of Rosa Mystica and an Immaculate Heart of Mary Statue.
Each week (from Wednesday afternoon to the following Wednesday morning) two families will have the opportunity to take these statues home and use them as a source of inspiration, prayer and reflection. The tote bag containing the statue will also have
suggested prayers. This special tradition will hopefully be one full of meaning and faith for each of you. Click here    to sign up.

NJHS TUTORING
Please click here to sign up for tutoring on
Tuesday, November 28th.

MISSING SOMETHING?

Parents, you may want to check with your child to see if they are missing part of their school uniform, PE uniform, or a lunch box.  We have lots of items that have been turned in to our Lost & Found, now located in the white cabinets in the hallway near the nurse's office.  Please stop by, or have your child stop by, if your child has lost something. These items will be donated or discarded on Friday Nov. 17th, at noon.

Please remember to put names on lunch boxes and uniform items!

HOMEWORK SURVEY FOLLOW UP
As you may remember from the results of the homework survey sent previously this year, it was determined that the average homework load in your student's grade was above what we are aiming for as a school. Since that last survey, the entire faculty has discussed these results. Additionally, administration has met with each grade level individually. My hope is that you have seen some changes. This survey is being distributed so that we can see what improvements have been made and if further adjustments are necessary. If you have specific concerns, please share in the comment box.

THANK YOU
Thank you to everyone who participated in our Mama's Pizza Lunch/Dinner
out  on October 18th.  SAS received a check for  $678!

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS
Due to school and community event conflicts, we have decided to move Friday Night Lights until December 15, 2017!

Here is the NEW sign up link:

We will see what kind of response we get as we know the advent season is filled with several family gatherings etc.  If we get a healthy response, we will stick with December 15, if we do not, we will move it to January.

Thank you for your understanding and patience!  It is very important that we follow the Holy Spirit's direction in these events.  God has amazing plans for your children and we must listen to where He is leading us and meet your children where they are today.
