SAUSD PARTNERING TO HOLD DACA TOWN HALL SEPTEMBER 27
To support Santa Ana Unified School District students and families that may be affected by recent changes to DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, the school district is holding a DACA Town Hall next week in partnership with Congressman Lou Correa and Santa Ana College. The event takes place Wednesday, September 27, from 6:00 p.m. through 8:00 p.m., at Santa Ana Valley High School, located at 1801 South Greenville Street. FIRST SPEECH AND DEBATE COMPETITION OF THE SCHOOL YEAR HELD AT CENTURY
Nearly 400 intermediate school students participated in the first
Speech and Debate competition of the school year, held September 16, 2017 at Century High School. The day culminated with an awards ceremony in the gym, where students were joined by parents, staff, district leaders, and members of the
Santa Ana Kiwanis Club, which has supported the program since its inception. The
Advanced Learning Academy won the sweepstakes, and many students took home individual awards. To watch the ceremony,

FEATURED SCHOOL: MONROE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
As part of our ongoing video series highlighting all SAUSD schools, this week we debut a new video focusing on what makes
Monroe Elementary School special. In it, students, parents and educators speak about how the school positively impacts the lives of its students and families through technology, reading, inclusivity, and college and career preparedness. SHOWCASE HIGHLIGHTS SAUSD'S SUMMER ENRICHMENT OFFERINGS
More than 4,900 Santa Ana Unified students attended enrichment courses and camps over the summer, where they learned about a range of topics from robotics, to economics, to hydroponics. Students and staff highlighted those programs during the
Summer Enrichment Showcase, held September 13, 2017 at Santa Ana High School. "This is a celebration of all their accomplishments," said Alfonso Jimenez, Ed.D., Assistant Superintendent, K-12 Teaching and Learning in a new video about the showcase. To watch it,

SCHOOL POLICE TRAIN ON EMERGENCY HELICOPTER EVACUATIONS
Villa Fundamental Intermediate School served as a special training site for the
Santa Ana Unified School District Police Department's joint training exercises with the Orange County Sheriff's Department recently. School police learned how to use the Sheriff's helicopters in the event that they need to quickly evacuate sick or injured people, said Lt. Kevin Phillips of the school police department. SUPERINTENDENT PHILLIPS WRITES EDITORIAL
ENCOURAGING COMMUNITY TO PLEDGE SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS
Superintendent Dr. Stefanie Phillips has written an editorial for the
Orange County Register about the importance of pledging support for Orange County students, both now at the start of the new school year and throughout the duration of the students' personal journeys. "Whether students choose to further their education in college or enter directly into the workforce or military, it is our pledge as educators to provide them with the necessary tools and support to get them there," she wrote. ANNUAL PARENT CONFERENCE & COMMUNITY FAIR SCHEDULED
Mark your calendars! The
Annual Parent Conference & Community Fair is coming up. It will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on October 14, 2017 at Saddleback High School, 2802 S. Flower St. in Santa Ana. Parents, educators and administrators will participate in a day-long series of workshops, informative sessions, and community fair designed to help parents assist their students in achieving success.

BOWERS HOSTING FREE 'TEACHER'S NIGHT OUT AT THE MUSEUM'
Bowers Museum is hosting a free "Teacher's Night Out at the Museum" from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 4. All teachers, school administrators, and staff can enjoy time to explore the
current galleries at both Bowers Museum and the nearby Kidseum. The evening includes light refreshments, cash bar, appetizers, art projects, and all-gallery access. Book your school tour on-site and you will have priority for scholarship funding. Or enter a drawing to win a free field trip for your class.
