SAUSD BOARD PROCLAIMS APRIL 11, 2018 BARBARA LAWRENCE-HILL DAY

For 130 years, SAUSD has been creating an educational legacy tracing back as early as the 1880's.

The late Barbara Ann Lawrence-Hill is an example of that legacy by becoming SAUSD and Orange County's first African American Teacher in the 1960's. To honor her legacy and the many contributions she made in the lives of the SAUSD community, the SAUSD Board of Education has adopted a resolution, proclaiming April 11, 2018, as Barbara Ann Lawrence-Hill Day. "It is truly an honor to recognize someone who broke barriers during a tumultuous time in our country when people of color had very little rights and were discriminated against because of the color of their skin. Mrs. Lawrence-Hill made a sacrifice for the benefit of Santa Ana children, so it's a pleasure to honor her and designate a special day on her behalf," said Valerie Amezcua, SAUSD Board President.

Hired in 1963, Lawrence-Hill taught at Fremont Elementary, Diamond Elementary and Madison Elementary School. She retired in June of 1996 after 33 years of service. She passed away on January 26, 2018 at the age of 82. To read the resolution adopted in her honor and learn more about the impact she made in SAUSD, click here.
