SANTA ANA CHAMBER HONORS STUDENTS AND COUNSELOR WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

The 8th Annual Difference Makers: Celebrating Extraordinary People Scholarship Awards Banquet is a way for the business leaders who serve as members of the Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce to shine a spotlight on the good work that high school students are doing to make our city a better place.

Seniors from each SAUSD high school, as well as other Santa Ana schools and Santa Ana College, received checks from donors, providing a head start on college expenses.

Each year, the Chamber recognizes an outstanding educator. This year, they selected Mireya Vazquez, Counselor, at Century High School. Vazquez is a product of SAUSD, graduating from Valley High School. "She is a dedicated counselor who treats her students as she would want her own son to be treated," said Beau Menchaca, Century Higher Education Coordinator.
WILLARD PRINCIPAL SELECTED OUTSTANDING ARTS ADMINSTRATOR

Congratulations to Willard Intermediate Principal Amy Scruton for receiving this year's Outstanding Arts Administrator Award from the Orange County Music and Arts Administrators (OCMAA).  Scruton was selected because of the incredible impact she has made at Willard and the amazing things she has done to engage students, teachers and families and create energizing and inclusive opportunities through the Turnaround Arts Initiative. "There have been some truly magical moments at Willard because of Amy always there, saying "yes" and making it happen. I've witnessed the delight on many happy students' faces and seen them grow in confidence and self-respect," said Steve Venz, Chairperson of OCMAA.
SPURGEON TEACHER SELECTED OUTSTANDING MIDDLE SCHOOL VOCAL MUSIC EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR

Congratulations to Spurgeon Intermediate School Choir Teacher Caran Holland for receiving this year's Outstanding Middle School Vocal Music Educator of the Year from the OCMAA. Holland was selected because of the tremendous gift she has given to so many students who discovered their love and talent for vocal music through her energy and passion. "Spending time in her classroom is truly a gift as I watch her, master maestro, engage students in so many ways. She engages them from the minute they enter the class with a personal greeting, to the minute they are dismissed when the bell rings," said Robyn MacNair, Visual and Performing Arts Specialist.

CARR RECEIVES MUSIC MERIT AWARD

Congratulations to Carr Intermediate School for receiving the Support Music Merit Award from the NAMM Foundation. This award is an opportunity for a school to be acknowledged for its commitment to music education.

Carr is the only intermediate school in SAUSD to have a Mariachi. This is an example of the innovation and passion to cultivate the arts in those middle years. We look forward to hearing more about the growing music program at Carr.
