FOUR SAUSD SCHOOLS TAKE PART IN 'AMERICA'S BATTLE OF THE BOOKS'

Scholars from Garfield, Jackson, Edison and Greenville Fundamental elementary schools competed in the "America's Battle of the Books" tournament on Nov. 30, 2017 at Garfield Elementary. Students read 10 books and were quizzed on specific details of those books during the fast-paced competition. A team from Greenville won first place. Congratulations to all participants! DISTRICT'S TEEN ARTS COUNCIL CONVENES FOR SECOND TIME 
  
The district's Teen Arts Council met for the second time recently. Students from 6 comprehensive high schools explored Bowers Kidseum and Bowers Museum in session 2 and learned about how to develop skills to be successful in the creative industries. Student leaders are using design thinking to plan the upcoming district art show, Artspiration, which will bring surprises and interactions on March 28 and 29, 2018.

NEW SIGNAL INSTALLED OUTSIDE WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY       
  
The Washington Elementary School community this week celebrated the installation of a new traffic signal outside the school, on the corner of Anahurst Place and Flower Street. Parents advocated for the addition of the signal with pedestrian safety in mind.

EMPLOYEES OF THE MONTH NAMED
  
The Board of Education this week recognized Lynette White, office manager at Century High School, as the district's Classified Employee of the Month for November 2017. "Lynette is amazing," Principal Jonathan Swanson, Ed.D. said in a new video about White. "Without her, Century wouldn't be where it is right now." To watch the video, click here

The Board this week also honored Adriana Huezo, Higher Education Coordinator at Segerstrom High School, for being the district's Certificated Employee of the Month for November 2017. "She is absolutely amazing," Principal Duncan McCulloch said in a new video about her. "She is instrumental in building a college atmosphere at Segerstrom." To watch it, click here.

BOARD APPOINTS TWO TO MANAGEMENT POSITIONS       
  
The Board of Education this week appointed Emily Wolk, Ph.D. as Executive Director of Research and Evaluation, and Jeremy Cogan as Director of Facilities Planning. 

Dr. Wolk has over 29 years of experience in education. She began her career as an Elementary teacher in 1988 and went on to become Title VII Project Coordinator in 1995; Curriculum Specialist in 2000; Research and Evaluation Curriculum Specialist in 2006; and Certificated Educational Research Analyst in 2009 for SAUSD. From 2015 to the present, she has served as the Assistant Director of Research and Evaluation for SAUSD. 

Cogan began his career as a Transportation Planning Consultant for the City of Santa Monica in 2009 and Legislative Assistant/Communications Director for the Office of Congresswoman, Grace F. Napolitano in 2005. From 2010 to the present, he has been the Assistant Vice President for CFW, Inc.
BOARD HIGHLIGHTS   
  
The Board of Education met on November 28, 2017. 

The meeting began with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance by student Ariana Fuentes from Walker Elementary School. 

After, student ambassadors from Middle College, REACH Academy, Saddleback and Segerstrom high schools gave reports about their schools. 

During the meeting, the Board recognized Certificated Employee of the Month for November 2017, Adriana Huezo, and Classified Employee of the Month for November 2017, Lynette White. 

In addition, the Board received an·Early Learning Plan update, and approved a partnership agreement with the Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce and the High School Inc. Foundation to support Santa Ana Valley High School and High School Inc. Academies.  

The next Regular Meeting of the Board of Education will be held on December 12, 2017, at 6 p.m.

DAVIS CHESS CLUB WINS MEDALS IN FALL TOURNAMENT

Twenty students from Davis Elementary School competed against peers from across Orange County during the Staser Fall Scholastic Chess Tournament this month at the Great Park in Irvine. The team played its best chess ever, winning 7 medals out of 18 medals in the 4th and 5th grade section. It also won four 3rd place medals, two 2nd place medals and one 1st place medal. Davis has hosted a Chess Club for 15 years. Students practice during recess and lunch, and learn how to be responsible, how to help each other, and how to think critically.
FRANKLIN STUDENTS RAISE FUNDS FOR DISASTER VICTIMS  
  
Franklin Elementary School students from Mr. Miller's 5th grade class have raised $376 to help others. Mr. Miller's class partners with UNICEF to raise money to help children who are affected by natural disasters around the world.
CHAVEZ STUDENTS STUDY OCEANOGRAPHY IN DANA POINT
  
Cesar Chávez High School science students recently participated in an advanced program designed for high school and college students to investigate impacts on local marine ecosystems. The lab included learning about ocean chemistry, and invasive species in the Dana Point Harbor. Students also used water quality probes, iPads, quadrats, and microscopes to determine the magnitude of ecological disturbance. Aboard the R/V Sea Explorer, students had opportunities to use oceanographic equipment, to take biological samples, and more. Students returned excited and inspired to think about careers in science.

ART BY SAUSD EDUCATORS TO BE DISPLAYED DOWNTOWN
  
Artwork by teachers from Villa Fundamental Intermediate, Segerstrom High School and Godinez Fundamental High School will be on display during a special California Art Educator Association show from December 2, 2017 to January 6, 2018 in the SAC Arts Gallery at the Santora Building in Downtown Santa Ana. First Saturday Receptions will take place from 6 to 10 p.m. on December 2, 2017 and January 6, 2018. In addition, the Carr Intermediate mariachi group and Godinez Fundamental High School choir will perform from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. during the December 2, 2017 Artwalk.
DONATE TO CENA TO BRING HOLIDAY CHEER TO CHILDREN   
  
If you're doing any holiday shopping this week, please keep our annual CENA event in mind, as your help is needed to make our annual SAUSD holiday tradition a success. Each year, employees, family members, and friends support Caring Educators Nourishing All (CENA). This year, it will be held from 8:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. on Sunday, December 24, 2017 at Santa Ana Valley High School, 1801 S. Greenville St. It's an opportunity to bring holiday joy to a child's face by providing warm meals, toys, books, dictionaries, and even a visit from Santa himself! Schools will collect toys and books, and we are also in need of monetary donations and volunteers.
