CENTURY STUDENTS HELP LA CHARGERS DISTRIBUTE FOOD TO THE NEEDY 
  
The Century High School football team this week assisted the LA Chargers and the Spanos family, in partnership with Lift Up America, in distributing more than 30,000 pounds of protein donated by Tyson Foods to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. The Chargers and Lift Up America have been working together for more than 10 years. Century students were featured on the LA Chargers website and on local TV newscasts. SANTA ANA VALLEY STUDENTS MOVE ONTO NEXT ROUND OF AUTO SKILLS COMPETITION     
  
Angel Arroyo and Gonzalo Sanchez from Santa Ana Valley High School placed second at the Orange County Automotive Dealer Association (OCADA) Auto Tech Semi-Finals Workstation Challenge on December 2, 2017 at Cypress College, and will now advance to the Regional Finals. The team that places first at regionals on February 10, 2018 will then advance to the national competition, to be held in New York in April 2018. Best of luck to both! 
MARTIN STUDENT FINISHES FIRST IN GIRLS ON THE RUN 5K
  
Nataly Vazquez, a fourth grader from Martin Elementary School, was the top finisher in the Girls on the Run 5K at Heritage Park in Irvine on December 9, 2017. Vazquez was among 17 students from Martin that participated in the run and completed the course. Overall, 136 girls from nine schools across Orange County took part in the run, which is part of a larger program that encourages girls to recognize their individual strengths and celebrate connections with others.
NEW VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS GARFIELD ELEMENTARY'S MANY ATTRIBUTES  

As part of the district's ongoing video series highlighting the attributes of all SAUSD schools, today the SAUSD-TV team is releasing a new video focusing on the many benefits of attending Garfield Elementary School. The school's focus on early literacy and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) coupled with strong parent involvement and a range of extracurricular activities makes Garfield a strong choice, said parents, students and educators interviewed in the new video. SAUSD EMPLOYEES OF THE MONTH NAMED
  
Angelica Fournier , School Office Manager at Heroes Elementary School, is the district's Classified Employee of the Month for December 2017. "She makes sure that students, parents and staff have the best experience possible at our school and for that we are very grateful," Principal Diana Torres said in a new video about her. Robin Saltzer, a Teacher on Special Assignment at Garfield Elementary School, is the district's Certificated Employee of the Month for December 2017. "She is a servant leader," Principal Kasey Klappenback said in a new video about her. "She serves our students, our families, and our teachers every single day with all of her heart." ELEANOR RODRIGUEZ HONORED FOR COMMUNITY IMPACT    
  
Eleanor Rodriguez, Principal of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School, received the Community Impact Award from Templo Calvario CDC during its Christmas Partner Celebration, held December 4, 2017 at The Hacienda in Santa Ana. Rodriguez launched the Raising Highly Capable Kids program in Santa Ana, which will be in place in more than 35 schools by the end of the year, impacting hundreds of parents.

SAUSD BOARD OF EDUCATION APPOINTS TWO TO MANAGEMENT ROLES
  
The Board of Education this week appointed David Richey as Director of Pupil Support Services (School Climate), and Lorraine E. Sanchez as Coordinator of Special Projects/Career Technical Education (CTE). Congratulations to both!  

Richey has over 31 years of experience in education. From 2014 to present, he has served as Principal at SAUSD's Santa Ana Valley High School. 

Sanchez began her career as an ROP/CTE Teacher for Riverside County Office of Education in 1990. From 2016 to present, she has held the position of CTE TOSA - Curriculum/Data/Counseling for the Riverside Unified School District.

BOARD HIGHLIGHTS 
  
Congratulations to our new SAUSD Board of Education officers. During its annual organizational meeting on December 12, 2017, the Board elected Valerie Amezcua, President; Rigo Rodriguez, Ph.D., Vice President; and Alfonso Alvarez, Ed.D., Clerk. 

In addition, the Board designated member John Palacio to serve as the district representative on the Orange County Committee on School District Organization, and established the date, time, and place of regular meetings for 2018. 

The meeting began with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance by Hector Zagal, a student from Hoover Elementary School. After, student ambassadors from Century, César Chavez, Santa Ana, and Santa Ana Valley high schools gave reports about their campuses. 

The Board also honored Certificated Employee of the Month for December 2017 Robin Saltzer, and Classified Employee of the Month for December 2017 Angelica Fournier, and acknowledged the Consulate of Mexico, Santa Ana and Yvote - Young Voter Resources.  

In addition, the Board received a Local Control Accountability Plan Annual Update and a Budget Development Update.

EMIL AHANGARZADEH: CERTIFIED CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER    
  
Congratulations to Emil Ahangarzadeh, Assistant Principal of MacArthur Fundamental Intermediate School, who has been certified by the California Education Technology Professionals Association as a Chief Technology Officer. He is now among less than 200 certified CTOs in California public education. He completed the eight-month program last week, which is recognized by the CDE, FCMAT, and CETPA.
KEVIN ARMSTRONG MD MEMORIAL SPORTS FOUNDATION PROVIDES T-SHIRTS TO SAUSD ATHLETES 
  
Since 2005, the Kevin Armstrong MD Memorial Sports Foundation has been helping SAUSD athletes succeed by hosting running clubs and events, supplying free running shoes and other items to students, supporting intermediate school sports tournaments and more, all to encourage students' efforts and inspire them to stay the course. The group recently designed T-shirts especially for the Boys Soccer and Girls Basketball Tournaments, hosted December 2, 2017 by Saddleback High School. Here, the Girls basketball team from McFadden Intermediate School, accompanied by Coach Tom Morris and Principal Ignacio Muniz, gathers for a group photo in its stylish new gear. CENTURY HIGH SCHOOL E-BUSINESS ACADEMY TAKES HONORS AT SAN DIEGO TRADE SHOW AND EXHIBITION    
  
The Century High School e-Business Academy business teams recently competed in their first competitive event of the season at the San Diego Trade Show and Exhibition. The four companies from Century were among 42 teams from across California. The senior company Signum led the way winning four gold awards; three other companies from the school also won awards. In addition, results of the national branding competition were announced, with 205 team submissions from across the United States. Century had strong representation with junior company PowerCloud winning a national gold award for company branding. Both senior companies, Taste of the World and Signum, received national bronze awards. To read more, click here.
MORE THAN 280 FAMILIES HELPED DURING FOOD DISTRIBUTION AT SPURGEON 
  
On December 9, 2017, Spurgeon Intermediate was the site of a food distribution sponsored by the Tzu Chi Foundation. Through the effort, food, blankets and clothing were given out to more than 280 families at the school. "When things are tough in the community it can absolutely impact our school," Principal Stuart Caldwell wrote in a new message to the Spurgeon community. "However, when we are open to seeing the joys that surround us they are all the more poignant for the challenges from which they have emerged." To read more, click here.
SADDLEBACK STUDENTS LEARN EMERGENCY RESPONSE SKILLS    
  
On December 2, 2017, members of the Saddleback High School NJROTC completed several skills in Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), including using a fire extinguisher and marking doors after a room has been searched. The CERT team then went on to complete the required skills testing for the American Red Cross in basic first aid and CPR skills. The American Red Cross CPR and First Aid skills test is required for all students to get their CPR/FA certification. Currently, Saddleback has 17 students that are CERT and CPR qualified. The students are currently looking forward to training with the Orange County Fire Authority in January, date to be determined, to further enhance their skills.
UPCOMING EVENTS 
SAUSD SCHOOLS TO HOST RANGE OF VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS EVENTS IN DECEMBER 
  
Santa Ana Unified School District schools are performing various concerts, plays and other works in the weeks leading up to winter break. SAUSD students, for example, will take part in the Christmas at the Mall event, where  multiple schools will provide entertainment from 4 to 6 p.m. December 20, 2017 at Main Place Mall.
