VILLA FUNDAMENTAL NAMED AVID NATIONAL DEMONSTRATION SCHOOL 
  
Congratulations to Villa Fundamental Intermediate School for being named an AVID National Demonstration School. The final evaluation included a visitation by the national committee on January 30, 2018. Villa is the first school in SAUSD to receive such a designation. "It's a phenomenal, unified effort from all involved and we are so pleased that the AVID organization has chosen to give us this recognition," Superintendent Dr. Stefanie Phillips said in a new video about the award. CENTURY COUNSELOR TO RECEIVE COLLEGE BOARD HIGH SCHOOL COUNSELOR AWARD     
  
Century High School Lead Counselor Mireya Vazquez has been selected by the Orange County Department of Education and the College Board to receive a College Board High School Counselor Award. The award recognizes applicants who, among other criteria, demonstrate leadership and advocacy in school counseling practices, initiatives and programs focused on increasing equity in K-12 college and career readiness outcomes, especially for underrepresented populations. "It is a testament not only to the work she does, but the entire counseling Dream Team," said Principal Jonathan Swanson, Ed.D.  
TWO SAUSD TEACHERS RECOGNIZED AT STAPLES CENTER APPRECIATION NIGHT
  
Two Santa Ana teachers were recognized this week at the Staples Center during Teacher Appreciation Night. 
Mike Miller, a 5th grade teacher at Franklin Elementary School and Nicole Hamamura, a Kindergarten teacher at Madison Elementary School, were both recognized on the court before the Clippers game for their dedication to SAUSD students.

CURRENT AND FORMER SAUSD STUDENTS NOMINATED TO SERVICE ACADEMIES  

Congressman J. Luis Correa (CA-46) has nominated several current and former SAUSD students to Service Academies. They include: Grant P. Cuevas (Valley High School) - Nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy; Adolfo Magarin (Godinez High School) - Nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy; Zoe Alora Velez (Segerstrom High School) - Nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy; Seth R. Chavez (2017 Segerstrom High School graduate) - Nominated to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy; and Natali H. Pacheco (2017 Santa Ana High School graduate) - Nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy. Congratulations to all!

Spurgeon Intermediate School has released a new video highlighting its students with the top 5 Accelerated Reader scores, including Grecia Baltazar, who has hit the 2-million word mark. SADDLEBACK STUDENT WINS CITY WATER POSTER CONTEST FOR SECOND TIME
  
Alberto Rodriguez, a senior at Saddleback High School, is a two-time grand prize winner of the City of Santa Ana's Water Poster Contest. Alberto is a member of the Teen Arts Council at Bowers Museum and is helping to plan the District's Artspiration Visual Arts Showcase exhibition, on March 28-29, 2018 and has been nominated for the OC Register's Artist of the Year award. Alberto hopes to attend Laguna College of Art & Design in the fall. In addition, Julisa Julian, a junior from Saddleback was named a finalist. 
GODINEZ TEACHER NAMED CERTIFIED JOURNALISM EDUCATOR
  
Joyce Feuerborn, English/Journalism teacher at Godinez Fundamental High School, recently received her certification as a Journalism Educator (CJE) from the Journalism Education Association (JEA). It required 18 hours of coursework including studying real-world reporting at the University of Nevada at Reno on a grant, taking multiple courses at Cal State Fullerton, and attending the JEA national annual conferences yearly.
SAUSD ALUMNA NAMED DETECTIVE OF THE YEAR
  
Maria Lopez, a detective with the Santa Ana Police Department (SAPD) and an SAUSD alumna, was named Detective of the Year during the Annual Public Safety Award Banquet for 2017. The Elks Lodge in collaboration with the Santa Ana Police Officers Association and SAPD honored members of the police department as the detective and the police officer of the year for 2017 during the event. Lopez graduated from Century High School in 2002, and for the past two years, has been an assistant varsity basketball coach at her alma mater. To read more, click here.

NEW SEMESTER TO BEGIN 
AT SANTA ANA COLLEGE  
  
It's that time of year again: A new semester is about to begin at Santa Ana College (SAC). As part of SAUSD's valuable educational partnerships, participating SAUSD graduates can attend SAC full time for free their freshman year and receive a laptop, and have guaranteed transfer admission to Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine. DEADLINE TO APPLY FOR MINI GRANTS FROM SANTA ANA PUBLIC SCHOOLS FOUNDATION APPROACHING  
  
Each year, the Santa Ana Public Schools Foundation offers mini grants to Santa Ana Unified School District educators to support innovative projects for students and to provide special opportunities for which no other funding exists, with the goal of enhancing achievement. Examples include: instructional projects, classroom equipment, special events or activities for students, and specialized classroom supplies. The deadline to apply is February 16, 2018. Don't miss out on applying for one of these grants. Applications are available on the SAPSF website, here.   
ANNUAL 5K 'WELLNESS RESOLUTION RUN' COMING FEBRUARY 24 
  
The Santa Ana Unified School District is proud to announce the return of the annual resolution run at Godinez Fundamental High School/Centennial Regional Park. SAUSD's yearly 5k fun run event will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2018 from 8 to 11 a.m. at Godinez Fundamental High School/Centennial Regional Park, 3002 Centennial Road in Santa Ana. Registration is limited to benefits-eligible employees only. To participate,  click here to sign up on or before February 22, 2018.
STAFF ASKED TO UPDATE EMERGENCY CONTACT INFORMATION   
  
An email was sent to all District staff this week asking employees to update their contact information in the District database. It is imperative that employees log into Oracle to verify the telephone number that is on file for them. If it has changed, please update it directly into the system no later than February 17, 2018. Timely communication is vital in the event of an emergency. Making sure that the District has your current contact information is part of the preparation process. Directions were included with the email. If you need assistance, please contact your immediate supervisor or the Help Desk at 714-558-4741.
