SAUSD BOARD PRESIDENT AND SUPERINTENDENT SEND MESSAGE TO COMMUNITY ABOUT SCHOOL SAFETY IN OPINION EDITORIAL   

Board President Valerie Amezcua and Superintendent Stefanie Phillips, Ed.D. authored an opinion editorial on the importance of school safety and how it takes a collective effort with the entire community to ensure students and staff are safe. Click here to read the editorial in the Voice of OC.  

In the article, they discuss the safety precautions that the District takes including an active shooter training session that many SAUSD teachers attended at Segerstrom High School on February 23. During this training, teachers learned how to make the safest decisions based on the circumstances.  
BOARD ADOPTS RESOLUTION REINFORCING SUPPORT FOR SCHOOL SAFETY

The Santa Ana Unified School District Board of Education reaffirms its commitment to school safety with the adoption of a resolution at its February 27th Board of Education meeting. The resolution is to inform the Santa Ana community, local, state, and federal legislature representatives of the District's commitment to keeping students and staff safe. COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS JOIN SCHOOLS FOR NEIGHBORHOOD CANVASSING 

Four elementary schools - Esqueda, Kennedy, Madison, and Monroe - partnered with community based organizations to canvass their neighborhoods and share the great things happening at their individual schools.

With the support of 136 volunteers that were comprised of teachers, parents, students, staff and community members, they were able to visit 980 homes and engage in conversations about the unique resources and programs offered to SAUSD students. The Neighborhood Canvassing is an ongoing effort throughout the District to retain and recruit families.
LADY JAGUARS CLINCH CIF WATER POLO CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE      

Congratulations to Segerstrom High School's Girls Water Polo Team for becoming the CIF Champions for Division 4.

The Lady Jaguars beat Long Beach Poly High School on February 24, at the Championship game in Irvine. This is their second CIF win since 2014.
 
 
 
MENDEZ TEACHER HONORED FOR EXPOSING ROCKETRY TO STUDENTS

SAUSD Teacher Andrea Earl was recently awarded the STEM Service Award from the Orange County Engineering Council for her leadership and mentorship in bringing a Rocketry program to Mendez Fundamental Intermediate School.

The Mendez Rocketry program started as a summer enrichment program in 2015 which led to the formation of the Mendez Hot Shots Rocket Team. This year, Mendez has four teams competing in the Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC). Andrea's rocketry program has been selected to present at the Student Powered Showcase at the National CUE conference in Palm Springs in March.

300 ATTEND WILSON FAMILY STEAM NIGHT

Wilson Elementary School recently held a family STEAM night coordinated by a team of SAUSD Teacher Effectiveness Coaches. Participants chose from 11 STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) stations: Electromagnetism, Tangrams, Cup Tower Challenge, Kaleidoscope & Lightbot on the iPads, Longest Chain Challenge, Bubble Art, Chromatography, Roller Coaster Challenge, Animal Habitats, and Musical Instruments.

"It was fun to work with my family because they helped me with my projects," said Ruth, a third-grade student. Teachers were able to facilitate stations supporting about 300 attendees including nearly 80 families. 
 
AMBASSADOR OF COMPASSION LEADERSHIP PROGRAM CELEBRATES SAUSD STUDENTS

Approximately 1,000 SAUSD students were honored for completing the Ambassadors of Compassion Leadership Program held at Cinemark Theaters in Orange. Through this program, students learned critical life skills and principles that will help them to be successful and to reach their full potential. In addition to attending classes and receiving mentoring, students were required to complete a service project. A special thanks to Ambassadors of Compassion for providing this wonderful opportunity to SAUSD students.  

MIDDLE COLLEGE HIGH STUDENT  REFLECTS ON SENIOR YEAR

NJROTC SUPERBOWL AT SANTA ANA HIGH SCHOOL

Santa Ana High School was the host of the NJROTC Superbowl on February 24, where 17 schools from around the state and Arizona competed in academics, physical, drill, and leadership events.

The award-winning NJROTC program at Santa Ana High School continues to be a model in the country.  
WALKER STUDENTS MEET READING TUTORS FACE TO FACE AFTER COMMUNICATING ON COMPUTERS

First grade scholars at Walker Elementary School met with their tutors from different businesses from Tutormate for the first time. "They were all very excited as they had been reading words and sentences and playing games through the computer for the last 3 months," said Mariana Grate, Principal of Walker. The tutors will come back in May to celebrate the students' reading progress.

WALKER STUDENTS TAKE TOUR OF CALIFORNIA SCIENCE CENTER

Fifth grade students at Walker visited the California Science Center and learned about the Endeavour, its artifacts, and the external tank.

The exhibit highlights the shuttle program's strong connection to California where all the orbiters were built.


BOARD HIGHLIGHTS    

 
The meeting was opened with the Recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance by Giselle Velasco Garcia, a 5th Grade student at Diamond Elementary.

The Board heard from High School Ambassadors from Godinez Fundamental, Lorin Griset, Middle College, REACH, Saddleback, and Segerstrom high schools.

The Board recognized five SAUSD current and former students, who were nominated by Congressman Lou Correa to U.S. Service Academies. They honored Grant Cuevas of Valley High School, Nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy; Adolfo Magarin of Godinez Fundamental High School, Nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy; Zoe Alora Velez of Segerstrom High School, Principal Nominee to the U.S. Naval Academy; Seth Chavez, graduate of Segerstrom High School, Nominee to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy; and Natali Pacheco, graduate of Santa Ana High School, Nominee to the U.S. Naval Academy.
 
The Board received an update on the District's work with CORE and a presentation from Casa de la Familia. The Board approved the summer school and enrichment programs for the 2017-18 school year. They also adopted a resolution that will reinforce the Board's commitment to safe schools. The resolution can be accessed by clicking here.

MITCHELL OPENS THE DOORS TO NEW ADMINISTRATION BUILDING

The Board of Education, Superintendent, Staff, Parents, and Students celebrated the opening of the new administration building at Mitchell Childhood Development Center on February 26. The facility is another example of the commitment the SAUSD Board of Education has made to provide students and staff with quality facilities.

SAUSD WELCOMES ALUMNI AT NETWORKING MIXER

SAUSD alumni from nearly every high school in the District were represented at the first Alumni Business Networking Mixer held at the beautiful Heritage Museum on February 22.

The mixer was part of the festivities celebrating the District's 130th anniversary and provided SAUSD alumni an opportunity to meet other alumni and learn how they could give back to their high school alma mater.   

APPLY FOR MINI GRANTS FROM SANTA ANA PUBLIC SCHOOLS FOUNDATION BY 3/9

Each year, the Santa Ana Public Schools Foundation offers mini grants to Santa Ana Unified School District educators to support innovative projects for students and to provide special opportunities for which no other funding exists, with the goal of enhanced achievement.

Examples include: instructional projects, classroom equipment, special events, or specialized classroom supplies and activities for students. New due date is Friday, March 9.

SAUSD STAFF PRACTICES PHYSICAL FITNESS AT ANNUAL WELLNESS RUN

On February 24, SAUSD employees braved the chilly early morning temperatures to participate in the District's Annual Wellness Resolution run at Godinez Fundamental High School. Participants were able to compete in the 5k fun run/walk and become eligible for prizes ranging from $100 to $500. The next employee wellness event will be March Madness 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament on March 10, at Segerstrom High School. Click here for more information.

ARTISTS, LITERATI AND POETS CONVERGE IN DOWNTOWN SANTA ANA FOR BOCA DE ORO/ALMAS SONADORAS: OC ARTS AND LITERARY FESTIVAL

Join us on March 3 for Boca De Oro, "Mouth of Gold" Festival and Almas Sonadoras, Youth Elevating the Arts.

The whole event, featuring a range of diverse and evocative literary, performance and visual artists, offers an eclectic, dynamic and diverse menu of  literary readings, poetry, spoken word, music, dance, and visual art experiences.  Part of an extended Artwalk, participants have the  
opportunity to enjoy galleries, performances, art-making and over 100 authors, writers, and poets.

Many of the events and performances feature our own Santa Ana Unified School District students, including Teen Arts Council members, teachers, staff and community arts partners.

KEVIN ARMSTRONG M.D. MEMORIAL SPORTS FOUNDATION GOLF TOURNAMENT REGISTRATION

The Kevin Armstrong M.D. Memorial Sports Foundation invites you to participate in its 10 th Annual Golf Tournament held on April 2, 2018. Hosted at the beautiful Tustin Ranch Golf Club, the foundation will use funds raised to provide low-income SAUSD students with athletic opportunities they may not normally have. SCHOOL BREAKFAST WEEK 3/5 - 3/9

It's time for Nutrition Services' annual National School Breakfast Week competition beginning March 5 - March 9. Encourage students to visit the cafeteria and enjoy a healthy breakfast every morning. The school sites with the highest percentage increase in breakfast during the competition week will win a catered BBQ from Nutrition Services.
