SANTA ANA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT HOSTS ITS ANNUAL PRINCIPAL FOR A DAY
 
SAUSD recently hosted its annual "Principal for a Day" event to provide members of the community an opportunity to experience the daily operation of a campus. Each of the district's 56 schools hosted a guest principal from the community on campus.
 
Following their morning assignments at their specified schools, the guest principals joined all the principals in the SAUSD for a luncheon and program at McFadden Intermediate School, where they shared their experiences.

Carlos Muniz served as Principal for a Day at Santa Ana Valley High School and spoke during the luncheon about his experience attending SAUSD schools growing up. Muniz was impressed with the teaching and learning, CTE Pathways and the student engagement that he witnessed as Principal for a Day.
"To see the number of programs that our students have is amazing and the connection that they have out in the community. I did not realize that SAUSD offered so many great programs that prepare students for the future," said Muniz. President of the Orange County Hispanic Chamber if Commerce.
 
Other guest principals included members of the SAUSD Board of Education, educators from higher learning institutions, and representatives from law enforcement, retail, restaurant, and other industries. Click here to view more pictures of the event.
 
6TH ANNUAL ARTSPIRATION SHOW HONORS SAUSD ARTISTS AND BENEFITS DISTRICT ARTS AND MUSIC PROGRAMS
 
Student artists from across SAUSD were honored during the 6th Annual Artspiration celebration on March 28, 2018 at the Bowers Museum. The event, held by SAUSD and the Santa Ana Public Schools Foundation, highlights the success and creativity of the arts.

 "This is an excellent opportunity to spotlight the creative talents of our students to our community and parents," said Superintendent Dr. Stefanie Phillips. "We have some of the best and brightest artists and through our work with Artspiration, we are able to celebrate them and provide a platform to showcase their great work."

U.S. CONGRESSMAN LOU CORREA PRESENTS SAUSD BOARD PRESIDENT AND DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY RELATIONS WITH WOMEN OF DISTINCTION AWARD

Congratulations to our Board President, Valerie Amezcua and our Director of Community Relations, Dr. Susie Lopez-Guerra for receiving the Women of Distinction Award for their contribution and impact to the community. They were presented a Congressional Recognition by U.S. Congressman Lou Correa on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at River Church in Anaheim. Mr. Alfredo Amezcua accepted the award on behalf of his daughter, Board President Valerie Amezcua.  
MONTE VISTA PRINCIPAL MRS. GREENE RECEIVES A SPECIAL RECOGNITION

On March 10, 2018, Monte Vista Elementary Principal Mrs. Greene was recognized at "Honor An Educator" celebration hosted at California State University, Fullerton.

MENDEZ TEACHER AWARDED 2018 NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC GROSVENOR TEACHER FELLOW

Congratulations to Ms. April Salas, teacher at Mendez, for being selected as 2018 National Geographic Grosvenor Teacher Fellow. The Grosvenor Teacher Fellow Program is a professional development opportunity for Pre-K-12 educators. Please click here to read the full story.
CENTURY STUDENT LUIS DIAZ IS BACK TO BACK CHAMPION IN CREATIVE LECTURE COMPETITION

Century student Luis Diaz, is BACK TO BACK Champion in the Creative Lecture Competition put on by Educators Rising. Luis received news that his Creative Lecture entry that earned him a First Place standing in the Southern California competition, has also earned him the Creative Lecture Champion for the state of California. His state title qualified Luis for Nationals in Orlando, Florida. C lick here  to view his video.

SANTA ANA HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR JOEY DANIEL TAKES 2ND PLACE IN THE NATIONAL WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Over the weekend, Santa Ana Senior, Joey Daniel wrestled in Virgina at the High School National Wrestling Championships. Elite wrestlers from across the nation took part in this competition, as they all fought for the championship title. Santa Ana High School Principal, Mr. Bishop stated, " The 2017-18 Wrestling Season Will Go Down as One of Santa Ana High School's Best. The "Saint" Community is proud of you. Your excellence and the gift you've given to the community of Santa Ana serves as a "Bright Shiny Light."

SAUSD HIGH SCHOOLS HOST THEIR ANNUAL 8TH GRADE VISITATION DAY

Incoming freshmen from our 9 intermediate schools took part in a fun filled day at their soon to be High School Each High School hosted over 450 incoming freshmen at their Annual 8th Grade Visitation Day. High Schools showcased their school spirit pride, athletic programs, extracurricular activities, college and career pathways and programs, alongside the welcoming of the school community.
FIRST LATINO JUDGE IN ORANGE COUNTY MAKES A SPECIAL APPEARANCE AT SANTA ANA HIGH SCHOOL TO SPEAK TO STUDENTS

Elizabeth G. Macias Legal Academy of Law at Santa Ana High School is a unique program that is well connected with the judicial system in Orange County. Judge Macias is an alumni from Santa Ana High School and has recently been honored to have the academy of law at Santa Ana High School to be name after her.

Judge Elizabeth Macias works closely with the program, administration, staff and students to bring exposure and first-hand field experiences to the students. Judge Franklin Aguirre, first Latino Judge in Orange County came to speak to the students at Santa Ana High School on behalf of Judge Macias. He connected with the Mayan history, as much as it was about the importance of "who we are," sharing with the students his personal connection. His empowering presentation of his own life-experiences and doing the things the right way, "con ganas," and attention to detail, has made him who he is today. He shared that it is possible overcome adversity but it is also important to know who you are.

Principal Jeff Bishop shared, " Providing students a relevant education is important to engage them in the why. Today, two judges from the Superior Courts, Judge Elizabeth Macias and Judge Franklin Aguirre, drew the connection between our own students and the gifts they already possess and why it's important to embrace their culture and heritage. Throughout the entire presentation our students hung on to every word spoken."
STUDENTS AT WILSON ELEMENTARY HAVE COLLECTIVELY READ OVER 82,000,000 WORDS

Wilson Elementary has created a culture of reading. The students are part of Wilson's Millionaire Club. Collectively the students have read over 82,000,000 words. Way to go Wilson Roadrunners!
CENTURY HIGH SCHOOL ATP-HYBRID CLASS RECEIVED A GENEROUS DONATION FROM THE COMMUNITY

Santa Ana Unified Adult Transition Program (Hybrid Class) reached out to Donors Choose last November for materials to add to their sensory room. Through this program and the generous donations from the community, the ATP-Hybrid class was able to add bean bags, a music system, and calming lights to the room. The ATP-Hybrid class was created last year to support special needs students who had issues with behavior, anxiety, and self-control.

Teacher, Annie Young wrote, "That she is grateful to everyone who donated (especially Deafinitely 4 Kids) and is glad her students have a space to decompress daily."
WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY CHEER TEAM PERFORMS AT PARTY IN THE PARK

Active Learning held its annual Party in the Park at Memorial Park. It was a fun filled morning as students, parents and the community enjoyed watching student lead dance performances and an opportunity to visit resource booths, such as, our SAUSD and SAUSD Head Start tables. Our Washington Elementary Cheer Team performed and showed their school spirit pride. Way to go Patriots!
ENGAGE 360 STUDENTS PERFORM A MARIACHI ENSEMBLE AT THE STUB HUB CENTER WITH RICH CULTURE AND TRADITION

Intermediate students in the Engage 360 After School Program had the opportunity to perform at the StubHub Center this past weekend! Students showcased several of the musical pieces that they have learned while participating in the after school program at their school sites. Students are not only exposed to the rich culture and tradition that Mariachi is known for, but for many students, it the first time learning how to play an instrument. Exposures and opportunities are important, as students discover their hidden talents and passion. Mariachi Sol de Mexico de Jose Hernandez is one of the community providers that work with our intermediate students in the Engage 360 After School Program.

SAUSD community! Just a friendly reminder, SAUSD will be on Spring Break on Monday, April 2 to Friday, April 6, 2018. School resumes on Monday, April 9, 2018. We look forward to welcoming all of our scholars back!

SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA COMBINED CONCERT BETWEEN UCI AND SANTA ANA HIGH SCHOOL MUSIC DEPARTMENT

The SanArts music department at Santa Ana High School has fostered a wonderful partnership with the UCI Symphony Orchestra over the last six years. This collaboration will truly come to realization as select students from our music program will attend a UCI campus tour, combine rehearsal with the UCI Symphony Orchestra, master class with Dr. Stephen Tucker, and a  free concert with our students and the UCI Symphony Orchestra. It will be a very positive and collaborative event for our kids.

Please consider attending and invite friends and family to this special concert as it will truly be a remarkable event!

The Santa Ana Unified School District is now accepting and enrolling new students for the 2018-19 school year.
