2018-19 SAUSD EDUCATORS OF THE YEAR ANNOUNCED    

Six well-deserving educators learned on March 8 that they had been selected 2018-19 Santa Ana Unified School District Educators of the Year  when they were surprised with a bouquet of balloons and special visit from Board President Valerie Amezcua, Superintendent Dr. Stefanie Phillips, and Deputy Superintendents Dr. Edmond Heatley and Dr. Alfonso Jimenez.

Congratulations to Valerie Glover, Saddleback; Jeanette Banuelos, McFadden; Rosalia Escutia, Segerstrom; Mackenzie Nolan, Mitchell; Kelly Crowe-Yrarrazaval, Willard; and Robin Saltzer, Garfield. All six educators of the year will be recognized on May 10 at the Annual Educators of the Year Ceremony to be held at Santa Ana High School.
 
 

SANTA ANA HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLER IS NEW STATE CHAMPION  
Santa Ana High School Senior Joey Daniel made history on March 3, 2018 as Santa Ana High School's first Boys Wrestling State Champion. Daniel won five consecutive matches to become the first wrestler at his high school to claim a state title. With his signature move, the front headlock, he took his opponent down to his back late in the 1st period. With a 5-0 lead going into the 2nd round, Joey was able to wrestle defensively and finished the 3rd period with a final score of 5-2 winning the school's first State title in its history.

"Winning State felt like a dream
; it still hasn't hit me yet," he said. Daniel is currently ranked 18th in the Nation. He will be joining the U.S. Marines after graduation.


KALEO CRUZ RECEIVES STUDENT ACSA AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE

On behalf of the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) Region 17, Santa Ana High School Student Kaleo Cruz was selected for the 2018 "Every Student Succeeding" Award. Cruz was recognized March 9 during a breakfast at Bowers Museum, where he was presented with a certificate and medallion.

 "I nominated Kaleo because of his hard work to achieve academic success, his personal triumph over adversity, and for being an inspiration to those around him," said Principal Jeff Bishop.
   
WILLARD TEACHER SEMI-FINALIST FOR NATIONAL SCIENCE AWARD

Laura Compton of Willard Intermediate School was recently presented with the 2018 Shell Science Teaching Semi-Finalist Award on behalf of the National Science Teachers Association and Shell Oil Company. Congratulations to Laura and the entire Willard community!
WILLARD REPRESENTING SAUSD IN D.C. AT KENNEDY CENTER 

Willard Intermediate School students are headed to Washington, D.C. to perform at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Willard is one of 40 schools in the nation selected to perform at the Turnaround Arts Talent Show.

VALLEY TEAM PLACES 3RD IN CYBER COMPETITION

Valley High School's Cyber Patriot Team Coached by Minh Vu placed 3rd in the State in the Gold Tier. Coding students on this team have demonstrated their hard work and dedication to cybersecurity.

The competition puts teams of students in the position of newly hired IT professionals tasked with managing the network of a small company. In the rounds of competitions, teams are given a set of virtual images that represent operating systems and are tasked with finding cybersecurity vulnerabilities within the images and hardening the system while maintaining critical services.   

FROM LA TO SAN DIEGO ART LOVERS SUPPORT SAUSD ALMAS SONADORAS DURING BOCA DE ORO ARTS FESTIVAL

Despite the rain, hundreds of people converged on Downtown Santa Ana to celebrate the vibrant visual, performing and literary arts in the SAUSD Almas Sonadoras, Youth Elevating the Arts event, part of the Boca De Oro Arts and Literary Festival.
 
Included in the programming were nationally recognized SAUSD Speech and Debate program students led by Sal Tinajero. "It is the arts that revitalizes communities. Our students are experiencing an education that taps into critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration," Tinajero said.
 
In addition to speech and debate, we had students from all 18 secondary schools and Madison Elementary perform in the various events through dance, live painting, art-making activities, poetry readings, improv workshops, and vocal and instrumental performances. 

GODINEZ STUDENTS DUAL ENROLL AT SANTA ANA COLLEGE

Godinez Fundamental High School is not only preparing students for college, but they are bringing college to them.

More than 35 students are currently taking SACs Math 219 - Statistics and Probability course. Upon completion of the course, they will receive college credit. Go Grizzlies! 
  

BOARD HIGHLIGHTS    

The SAUSD Board of Education appreciates and values the many sports offered to students. Board members recognized student athletes from winter sports at a special board meeting held Tuesday, March 6, 2018.

The next regular meeting of the Board of Education will be held on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at 6:00 p.m.

GREAT AMERICAN WRITE-IN ON MARCH 24TH

The Great American Write-in will be held March 24, 2018 at the Delhi Community Center in Santa Ana between 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. This free event is offered to the public every year to provide community members with the means to influence policy decisions by writing letters to their legislators. It's also a great opportunity for high school and college students to experience first-hand what informed citizen involvement in government is all about.

The organization will award $100 to the instructor/professor who sends the most students to the Write-in!

ARTSPIRATION COMING SOON

The Santa Ana Public Schools Foundation and Santa Ana Unified School District in partnership with Bowers Museum proudly presents the 6th Annual Artspiration event on March 28 and 29. Held at the beautiful Bowers Museum, the reception and gallery experience of student artwork will be on display on March 28 between 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. and the following day, the JFK Exhibit and Reception with Guest Melissa Shriver will be held on March 29 between 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

Admission for the March 29th event is $50.00. All proceeds support arts education for Santa Ana Unified School District students. There is no charge for the student exhibit on March 28. For more information, please click here.
