SAUSD CELEBRATES 2018 HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES WITH #30DAYSOFSAUSDGRADS CAMPAIGN

The Santa Ana Unified School District will celebrate the class of 2018 this month as graduating seniors conclude their educational journey in SAUSD and take part in their school's graduation ceremonies.

I n honor of the class of 2018, SAUSD is featuring #30daysofSAUSDgrads each day on social media and through an e-blast to staff. Each week, some of our outstanding seniors will be featured in the e-blast as another avenue to share their successes. 


CENTURY HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR LEAVES LEGACY WITH FUNDRAISER FOR CANCER RESEARCH

Congratulations to Yatziri Salgado, Century High School Senior,  for organizing the second time in a row  "Head Shave for Cures:  Century Conquers Cancer" fundraising event. 

This event raised more than $1100 dollars for the St. Baldrich's Foundation in the fight against childhood cancer.  More than 50 participants led by Principal Jonathan Swanson, Ed.D., administrators, counselors, teachers, support staff and students had their heads shaved to raise funds. " I am so happy that the entire Centurion community was able to support Yatziri with this fundraiser to make a difference  in the future of cancer research," said Dr. Swanson. #30DaysofSAUSDgrads
 
INSPIRING GODINEZ TEACHER HONORED IN SURPRISE VIDEO THAT HAS 1 MILLION VIEWS SINCE IT'S RELEASE ON MAY 8 
 
In honor of teacher appreciation month, Chester Maharaj of Godinez Fundamental High School, was honored by Adobe Creative Cloud in a surprise video that features his amazing work in South Africa as a photographer and the impact he has made on his students at Godinez in the classrom.

SEGERSTROM HIGH SCHOOL RANKED AMONG TOP SCHOOLS ON 2018 US NEWS AND WORLD REPORT NATIONAL RANKINGS

Segerstrom High School continues to be highly ranked among the top schools in the nation according to the 2018 US News and World Report. Released this week, the Jaguars have the highest ranking of high schools in SAUSD with a silver medal. This is the 3rd straight year that Segerstrom has received this award. Segerstrom was selected for many reasons including the school's 73% AP participation rate and success at preparing students for college and career.

Last year, three other SAUSD schools -- Godinez, Middle College, and Saddleback high schools --joined Segerstrom on the list. 
SANTIAGO ACCEPTS CHECK FOR $25,000 AS WINNERS OF SCHOLAR FOR DOLLARS

Thanks to the support of the SAUSD community, Santiago Elementary School was presented with a check for $25,000 for being the top winners of the Scholars for Dollars contest. 

 

Principal Norris Perez accepted the check on behalf of the Santiago School community along with Assistant Principal Myrna Acosta, and Teacher Sarah Seibert.  

SAUSD CLASSIFIED AND CERTIFICATED EMPLOYEES OF THE YEAR HONORED AT SPECTACULAR CELEBRATION


In celebration of the dedication and hard work of SAUSD employees, Classified Employees of the Year and Educators of the Year were honored at a reception and ceremony held at Santa Ana High School on May 8 and 9, 2018. The evening began with a reception with music provided by the Santa Ana High School Jazz Band and delicious appetizers and beverages provided by SAUSD's Nutrition Services Department.

After socializing with family, friends, and colleagues, all honorees were introduced individually during a ceremony where they received a host of certificates from the SAUSD Board of Education, Congressman Lou Correa, Senator Janet Nguyen, Assemblyman Tom Daly,  OC Supervisor Andrew Do, and Mayor Miguel Pulido. 
MICHELE CUNHA JOINS SAUSD FAMILY OF EDUCATORS RECEIVING DOCTORATE

Michele Cunha, Coordinator of Student Achievement in the Research and Evaluation Department, has successfully defended her dissertation, "Privacy Rights for Families and Children in K-12 Schools: A Mixed-Methods Study on the Effects of Perceptions of Educators on Implementation of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)", at Concordia University Irvine.  Congratulations to Dr. Cunha!

SUPERINTENDENT REPORT DELIVERED AT MAY 8, 2018 BOARD MEETING

Superintendent Dr. Stefanie Phillips delivered the Superintendent Remarks during the May 8, 2018, Board of Education meeting. She discussed Muir and Thorpe being recognized as California Distinguished Schools for 2018, a host of other staff and student achievements, and an update on how the District is working with the City on the homeless issue. SAHS STUDENTS FROM LATINO FILM INSTITUTE TOUR CBS

As part of the curriculum and field work of the Latino Film Institute at Santa Ana High School, students had the opportunity to take a tour of CBS and learn about the company's Entertainment Diversity & Inclusion division.

The Youth Cinema Project (YCP) is project based learning that produces competent, resilient, and real world problem-solvers and bridges the achievement and opportunity gaps by creating lifelong learners and the entertainment industry's multicultural future. 
 
STILL TIME TO ENROLL IN DUAL LANGUAGE IMMERSION PROGRAMS FOR 2018-19 SCHOOL YEAR

The Santa Ana Unified School District is now accepting and enrolling new students for the Dual Language Immersion Programs at five elementary schools including Jefferson, King, Lowell, Pio, Pico, and Romero-Cruz.

By enrolling children in a dual language program, children will have a competitive edge in our global society and be able to successfully compete in the top jobs of today and tomorrow. For more information, please contact the English Learners department directly at (714) 558-5855. 
 
The Dual Language Immersion Spanish Program begins on some campuses as early as preschool and continues through 8th grade at Carr and McFadden intermediate schools. Some campuses offer full day and part-time for preschool, TK, and Kindergarten classes.

CELEBRATE NATIONAL POLICE WEEK FROM MAY 13 - 19

T he Santa Ana School Police Department is the 3 rd  largest school police agency in the State of California and is the primary law enforcement agency for the Santa Ana Unified School District.  The Department provides 24-hour a day police services to over 50,000 students and 4,600 employees located throughout the District.

As a specialized law enforcement agency, they are committed to working closely with our law enforcement partners in the region to ensure the overall safety and security of the District and the community of Santa Ana. Celebrate our officers the week of May 13 - 19, 2018 in honor of National Police Week.
