SAUSD CELEBRATES 2018 HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES WITH #30DAYSOFSAUSDGRADS CAMPAIGN

I n honor of the class of 2018, SAUSD is featuring #30daysofSAUSDgrads to highlight some of our outstanding graduates. Use the hashtag #30DaysofSAUSDgrads to post and find photos and profiles.
TOP 100 SCHOLARS HONORED

On Friday, May 18, Santa Ana Unified School District's Top 100 Scholars were honored for academic excellence at Guaranty Chevrolet. Each high school was represented with students who had the highest GPAs among their peers in the class of 2018. 

"I am so very proud of our students for staying the course and accessing all of the resources and opportunities that have been made available to them. I wish them much success," said Stefanie Phillips, Ed.D., Superintendent.
PERFECT ATTENDANCE CAR GIVEAWAY WINNER
 
Congratulations to Santa Ana High School freshman Brandon Palacio for being awarded with a brand new Chevy Sonic for perfect attendance the entire school year. Thanks to a generous donation by Bruce Hamlin, Owner of Guaranty Chevrolet, Brandon will
have a new set of wheels to drive when he gets his driver's license. 

There were 816 students that were eligible to participate in the contest, an increase from 733 last year.
CENTURY SURPRISES SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS 

On Thursday, May 24, 2018, dozens of seniors were surprised with scholarships during the Century High School Scholarship Prize Patrol. This presentation is part of the Day of  R.O.S.E.S. (Recognition of Student Excellence in School) Celebration which culminated with the R.O.S.E.S. Ceremony later in the evening where outstanding seniors and other grade levels were honored for their departmental academic achievements.

 "We are excited to have a whole day of celebration for our outstanding students and for our classes to share in the scholarship presentations," said Dr. Jonathan Swanson, Principal of Century High School.  "We are grateful that so many community organizations and individuals are willing to invest in our students' higher education plans." #30DaysofSAUSDgrads
MADISON AWARDS ALUMNI AND MENTOR WITH SCHOLARSHIPS

On Saturday, May 26, 2018, Madison Elementary Madres En Acción presented three scholarships to past alumni and Madison Mentors.  Two of the honorees are former Madison students - Alexandra Alcocer and Edith Mendoza. Alcocer is a senior at Century High School and will be attending Cal State Dominguez Hills in the fall, and Mendoza is currently attending Fullerton College.  

The recipient of the third scholarship is Jose Rea, a high school student who has been mentoring Madison students through Saturday Science Academy and volunteering in our neighborhood community.  Congratulations to all three honorees and to the Madison Madres en Acción for the wonderful work they are doing promoting college attendance. #30DaysofSAUSDgrads
SPERNAK PARENTS FOUNDATION AWARDS WINNERS OF CONTEST  

Congratulations to the 22 winners of the Spernak Parents Foundation essay contest. Hosted at Jefferson Elementary School, the Spernak Parents Foundation is designed to honor the parents of James, Karen and Steve Spernak who worked at the Santa Ana Unified School District as work experience mentors and coaches assistants in the 1970's.

Each winner received a commendation from the Spernak family honoring Steve and Del Spernak and a certificate of recognition from Congressman Lou Correa. "Special thanks to Dr. Duran and Teacher Maureen Dougherty for their help with this foundation effort," said Steve Spernak.

POLICE CHIEF AWARDS HAMILTON TICKETS TO GODINEZ STUDENT

Iris Peña from Godinez Fundamental High School is the lucky winner of two tickets to the sold-out performance of the highly anticipated musical Hamilton. Peña was presented  with the tickets that were donated by Santa Ana Police Chief David Valentin. 

Iris won the tickets by writing a 150 word essay on the storyline of Hamilton and what the opportunity to attend this performance means to her. 

Prior to the show, Iris will enjoy a delicious dinner compliments of Chief Valentin at Maggianos. Thank you Chief Valentin for sponsoring this contest for SAUSD students!
PARENTS OF THE YEAR RECOGNIZED  

Congratulations to Martha Hernandez of Jackson Elementary School, Gloria Nuñez of MacArthur Fundamental Intermediate School, and Clemencia Zarco of Valley High School for being selected 2018 SAUSD Parents of the Year. 

These parents were recognized, along with all of the parents of the year from each school during the Annual Parent of the Year Ceremony held on May 23, 2018, at Segerstrom High School. 

BOARD HIGHLIGHTS    
 
The meeting of the Santa Ana Unified School District Board of Education convened on May 22, 2018. It began with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance by Analuisa Garcia, a student from Garfield Elementary School. The Board was entertained with selections from the talented Santa Ana High School Choir that recently performed at Carnegie Hall in New York. 

The Board recognized a host of students, who received Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Standout Scholarships. The Board also recognized the Certificated and Classified Employees of the Month.

The Board voted on a number of items and received an update on the District's Foster Youth Services and McKinney-Vento Program.

The next regular meeting of the Board of Education will be held on Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at 6:00 p.m.

TREVINO SELECTED CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH OF MAY

During the May 22, 2018, Board of Education meeting, the Santa Ana Unified School District Board of Education recognized Sophia Trevino, Autism Paraprofessional, at Mitchell Child Development Center as Classified Employee of the Month for May.

VANCE SELECTED CERTIFICATED EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH OF MAY

During the May 22, 2018, Board of Education meeting, the Santa Ana Unified School District Board of Education recognized David Vance, Teacher, at Adult Transition Programs for Certificated Employee of the Month for May.

FRANKLIN CELEBRATES ACADEMIC GROWTH

Excellent teaching and learning is happeing at Franklin Elementary School where Mrs. Scott's first grade class is celebrating 100 percent growth on MAP testing in language arts and math. Way to go!

WILSON STUDENTS READ 100 MILLION WORDS 

Students at Wilson Elementary School celebrated reading 100 million words this school year. To celebrate this significant achievement, students were treated to a barbecue lunch prepared by Nutrition Services and a DJ Dance Party.
SAUSD INTERMEDIATE TRACK & FIELD EVENT SPONSORED BY KAMSF

For over a decade, the Kevin Armstrong MD Memorial Sports Foundation (KAMSF) has sponsored the Santa Ana Unified School District Annual Intermediate Track & Field event. Over the years, KAMSF has provided T-shirts and healthy snacks for thousands of students as well as lunch for hundreds of dedicated coaches and volunteers.

Congratulations to all participants and the overall school winner MacArthur Fundamental Intermediate School.
