SUPERINTENDENT PHILLIPS CONTINUES WITH STUDENT OUTREACH
Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) Superintendent Dr. Stefanie Phillips is aiming to dialogue with students at all SAUSD intermediate and K-8 schools by the end of 2017 to learn more about the district's students and to identify how SAUSD can better serve them. This week, she met with students at Spurgeon Intermediate, where she recorded a new video about her district-wide outreach. "The whole purpose of this is really for intermediate students to know that they have a voice, that their thoughts and opinions matter in terms of the formation of educational programs, and the formation of initiatives," she said in the video. DONORS RAISE FUNDS FOR UNIFORMS AND SUPPLIES
Superintendent Dr. Stefanie Phillips rode the Carousel at Disneyland this week more than 40 times around and raised $5,135 in the process for the Santa Ana Assistance League's efforts to clothe 3,000 SAUSD students with new uniforms, shoes, undergarments, and much more at the start of next school year. She sends a special thank you to each person who donated to the Carousel of Possible Dreams fundraiser.

GODINEZ, SANTA ANA MATCH UP IN CIF ROUND 2
Godinez Fundamental and
Santa Ana high schools will match up in the
CIF Round 2 today, at 7 p.m. at the Santa Ana Bowl. Both Football teams have had a successful season. We wish both teams the best of luck; however, whichever team wins, is a victory for the district. Go Grizzlies and Go Saints!

MORE THAN 400 ATTEND FALL SPEECH & DEBATE TOURNAMENT
More than 400 students participated in the
Speech & Debate Middle School Tournament on November 11, 2017 at Century High School. The tournament sweepstakes winner was Advanced Learning Academy. The top winner for a large intermediate school was MacArthur and the top winner for a small school was Spurgeon. The program, now in its second year, continues to grow and has been supported since its inception by the Santa Ana Kiwanis Club. To view a video of the awards ceremony, click

BOARD APPOINTS TWO TO MANAGEMENT POSITIONS
The Board of Education this week appointed Alfonso Jimenez, Ed.D. as Deputy Superintendent of Educational Services, and Anastasia A. Smith as Chief of School Police Services.
Dr. Jimenez has over 21 years of experience in K-12 education. He began his educational career as an Elementary Teacher for Long Beach Unified School District; then became Assistant Principal for Bellflower Unified School District; K-12 Principal for Fullerton School District; Director of Curriculum & Instruction for Anaheim City School District; and Director of Elementary Education K-8/Director of Instructional Services K-12 for Lynwood Unified School District. In 2016, he was appointed to the position of Assistant Superintendent, Teaching and Learning for SAUSD.
Smith has over 27 years of experience in law enforcement. She began her career as an Officer in 1993 then became a Detective in 1997; Sergeant in 1998; Lieutenant in 2006; Interim Captain in 2009; Unit Commander/Lieutenant in 2010; and Captain in 2013. From 2014 to 2016, she was the Captain for Internal Affairs, Professional Standards and EEO Units until her retirement on March 4, 2016.

The Board of Education met on November 14, 2017.
The meeting began with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance by student Mario Leon from King Elementary. After, student ambassadors from Century, César Chavez, Lorin Griset Academy, Santa Ana, and Santa Ana Valley high schools gave reports about their schools.
During the meeting, school climate parents and partners were recognized, and the Board approved a Digital Media Course to expand A through G offerings for high school students.

SEGERSTROM STUDENT SIGNS WITH LONG BEACH STATE
Segerstrom High School on November 14, 2017 hosted a signing ceremony for senior baseball player
Basilio Pacheco, who has has received a full athletic scholarship to play baseball and pursue his degree at Division 1 Long Beach State University. Basilio, a left handed pitcher, is the first Segerstrom baseball player to receive a full ride to a Division 1 program. Last season, as a junior, Basilio led the Jaguars to their first Golden West League Championship and was named League MVP.

CENTURY HOLDS UNIVERSITY APPLICATION DAY WORKSHOP
Century High School, in collaboration with the Nicholas Academic Center and AVID team, held an "I'm In" University Application Day Workshop on November 13, 2017. In all, 153 A to G competitive students worked on their CSU, EOP, UC and financial aid applications. The goal was for more than 300 CSU applications to be completed, and more than 100 UC applications and 153 financial aid applications to be submitted by the end of the day. "Students will complete one of the first stages in their higher education process on this day," said Jonathan Swanson, Ed.D., Century High School Principal. "Students will be ready and prepared to meet the university application deadline ahead of time."

NATIONAL SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGY AWARENESS WEEK
It's National School Psychology Awareness Week (Nov. 13-17). This years theme is: Power Up! Be a Positive Charge. The goal is to highlight how taking a small positive action creates connections that lead to positive change, builds greater successes and develops the academic and social-emotional skills students need to promote personal achievement, growth, and resilience, as well as a sense of belonging and well-being. 'WE ARE SAUSD' LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
Today, SAUSD will host the "We are SAUSD Leadership Conference" in Downtown Santa Ana. Students will attend workshops, participate in activities, and have an opportunity to interact and get to know students from other schools across the district. They'll be able to engage with one another and voice their thoughts and opinions about a variety of topics. The conference begins at 9:30 a.m. and wraps up at 1:15 p.m.

SAHS STUDENTS WORKING WITH BREATH OF FIRE ON NEW PRODUCTION
The
Santa Ana High School Theatre Arts Conservatory and Breath of Fire Latina Theater Ensemble are working together to present a series of four adapted legends and myths from Mexico, Nicaragua and Cuba during "Leyendas," a new production coming to the Cal State Fullerton Grand Central Art Center's Little Theatre. A preview takes place at 7 p.m. today; productions are at 1 and 5 p.m. on November 18, 2017. The theater is at 125 N. Broadway in Downtown Santa Ana. Admission is free; RSVP required: 657-205-7714.

'WALLS THAT UNITE' MURAL TO DEBUT AT JEFFERSON
The Orange County Register has published a new story about Walls That Unite, a project that recently led Cal State Fullerton students and alumni to
Jefferson Elementary, where they spoke to students about college and career preparation and helped them created a mural exploring those themes. The mural will be unveiled on November 20, 2017. To read the story, click
