FREE Annual  Conferences
for Veterinarians and Vet Techs Sponsored by CVRC

Each fall, the Chesapeake Veterinary Referral Center (CVRC) sponsors two conferences - one for veterinary technicians and one for veterinarians. The conferences are a way for CVRC and its specialty practices --  Animal Dental Center, Anne Arundel Veterinary Emergency Clinic, Atlantic Veterinary Internal Medicine & Oncology, CVCA - Cardiac Care for Pets, Chesapeake Veterinary Surgical Specialists, Eyecare For Animals, VIoC and VNoC  -- to thank the referring vets and their staffs by providing a very informative meeting on current topics of interest and application.

This year's events, which will be held at Ruth's Chris Steak House, 1777 Reisterstown Road, Pikesville, Maryland, include:
  • VET TECHS: 6th Annual RVT Conference,
    Sunday, October 18th, 8:30am-4:15pm

  • VETERINARIANS: 17th Annual Fall Conference,
    Sunday, November 8th, 8:30am-4:15pm
Both days will include continuing education with CVRC's board-certified specialists, as well as fine cuisine. The conferences are each expected to be approved for 6 hours of continuing education from the State Board of Maryland. A bonus: Attendance prizes are given at the end of the meeting. Last year, top prize was a new Samsung Tablet!

Cranio-Cervical Lesion
By Kevin C. Stevens, ARRT, RT (R)(MR)

In this case study, a four-year-old Shelty presented with cervical pain, mild tetraparesis, ataxia of all four limbs, and severe right thoracic limb weakness. We have shown similar cases in the past but the imaging on this case provided some unique signs and details that are difficult to see on other cases.  MORE>>

Update on the 3rd Bi-Annual
VNS Symposium Held Aug. 7-8, 2015

The third biennial Veterinary Neurosurgical Society (VNS) symposium was held August 8-9 in Annapolis at the historic Maryland Inn

Dr. McDonnell was the host and local organizer for the event. He reports, "We had a terrific turnout with more than 30 veterinarians from around the world participating, including neurologists, surgeons, rehabilitators (PT) and radiologists. A total of 20 abstracts and papers were presented.

"We also had a very lively roundtable discussion on diagnosing and treating Chiari malformations that lasted for more than two hours. A second roundtable discussion and participant favorite, Neurosurgical Complications, ended the formal part of the symposium. Everyone joined together at the end with friends and spouses at the gala dinner Saturday night.

"It was a tremendous meeting that generated a lot of discussion and strengthened our commitment to find ways to improve our specialty in veterinary neurosurgery. We expect to have another symposium in 2017."

The goal of the VNS is is to advance the art and science of neurosurgery in the veterinary profession, and is open to all veterinary professionals who are graduates of veterinary schools or colleges and who have special interests in veterinary neurosurgery. A Warning for Those Who Give Their Dogs Peanut Butter

VIN News is reporting that xylitol, a sugar substitute that is toxic to dogs, is being used in peanut and other nut butter brands by at least five companies.

Dogs that consume the substance, which sometimes appears under other names, can develop a range of illnesses from hypoglycemia to acute liver disease, which can be life-threatening.  Read the full story here.

You can also read  an article on the effects of xylitol ingestion in dogs  that appeared in  Veterinary Medicine and access  a list of products that contain xylitol, provided by Preventive Vet.
