Austal USA Hosts SAWDC Quarterly Council Meeting
On Wednesday, March 20th, Austal USA hosted the SAWDC Quarterly Council meeting at their new office complex located on Addsco Road in Mobile, Alabama. Craig Perciavalle, President and CEO, kicked off the meeting followed by Don Keeler, Vice President of Human Resources. The day's event concluded with a tour of Austal USA's state of the art manufacturing facility.

National Fund for Workforce Solutions Holds Annual Director's Meeting
The annual director's meeting for the National Fund for Workforce Solutions
(NFWS) was hosted in Chicago by the Joyce Foundation
, an NFWS investor. NFWS Executive Director, Fred Dedrick, alongside Deputy Director, Navjeet Singh, spent two days with 30 of the NFWS site directors from across the nation including SAWDC's Laura Chandler and SAWDC Project Coordinator, Darwin Bolden.
The NFWS mission is the career advancement of low wage workers using a model of substantial employer engagement in order to increase the potential for successful outcomes. SAWDC has been an NFWS site since May 2010. Since that time, SAWDC has established four industry partnerships (aviation, industrial construction/manufacturing, maritime, and healthcare) and served 383 jobseekers and incumbent workers - 300 of those served have moved into industry jobs and/or upgraded their skills with 213 receiving industry recognized credentials.

SAWDC and the Alabama Aviation Center of Mobile, a division of Enterprise State Community College, hosted the first meeting of the Aviation Industry Partnership, which will serve as the Center's advisory council. The partnership will consist of lead industry employers. Its formation will allow SAWDC and its partner organizations within the workforce development system to better serve industry's needs and ensure the availability of a qualified candidate pool.
Industry representatives at the March 27th meeting included ST Aerospace Mobile's Bill Hafner, Vice President Human Resources, Michael Spakelak, AMT Administrator, and Robert Turner, AMT Program Administrator, as well as Tom Greer with Southern Avionics, and Ken Berga with UTC Aerospace Systems. Segers Aero Corporation, Mobile Airport Authority, Airbus, and Continental Motors will also serve.

2012 Mobilian of the Year
Dr. Bert Eichold, Mobile County Public Health Department's Public Health Officer and SAWDC Council member, was named 2012 Mobilian of the Year by the Cottage Hill Civitan Club. Click here to read more.
