AIDT/SAWDC Job Fair Shatters Expectations!

A maritime and construction trades career fair hosted January 16, 2013, attracted 537 job seekers, shattering organizers expectations for the event.

"Is that not amazing?" asked Laura Chandler, Executive Director of the Southwest Alabama Workforce Development Council, only minutes after the eight-hour job fair concluded.

The career fair was hosted jointly by the council and the Alabama Industrial Development Training program at the AIDT Maritime Training Center in Mobile.

A similar event in December, also hosted by SAWDC, in Bayou La Batre, attracted 225 job seekers.

"It's just so exciting to see this level of interest," said Lee Hammett, AIDT's assistant director for south Alabama.

Employers represented included include Performance Contractors Inc., Signal International, BAE Systems, C&G Boat Works Inc., Horizon Shipbuilding, Austal, VT Halter Marine, G.A. West & Co. and Ingalls Shipbuilding.
