Sierra Business Council February 2017

2017 is shaping up to be quite the year. From torrential storms throughout the Sierra to the political storms whipping up on a daily basis, SBC has kept our eye on the prize working to improve the state of the Sierra's communities, economy, and environment. 

Below you'll find some of our upcoming events, opportunities to market your favorite Sierra business, a peak into our most recent blog post, and the chance to join our team in fostering an even better Sierra Nevada. 
Sierra SBDC: So Many Workshops, So Little Time! 

The Sierra SBDC has been busy kicking off 2017 with a number of new workshops. Through partnership with  SCORE of Northern Nevada, we will be offering a quarterly Start Up Basics class designed to teach hopeful entrepreneurs or new businesses what it takes to start your business on the right foot. The first class was on February 2nd, but if you missed it, have no fear! Another class will be offered  May 9th at no cost to attendees

The next of the monthly Knowledge Bites workshop is coming to Truckee tomorrow,  February 16th, and will cover the legal nuts and bolts of Independent Contractors. In today's gig economy, it is so important to protect yourself and your company by understanding the labor laws.  Sign up today to attend this excellent event!

Call for Sierra Nevada Geotourism Nominations

Sierra businesses and destinations that invoke the character of our region can be featured on the Sierra Nevada Geotourism MapGuide. We have nearly 2,000 destinations nominated by local residents and fans of the region, but we know there are so many more amazing places, events, and businesses waiting to be nominated.

"Communities, the Economy, and the Environment at the Mountain Ventures Summit"

Last week I had the pleasure of participating in the  Mountain Ventures Summit, a three-day workshop of community leaders across fifteen mountain resort communities in the American West. Gathered in Telluride, Colorado, we discussed the economic model of mountain resort towns and how it shapes the local culture and community.

Representatives from Bend, Jackson, Sun Valley, Telluride, Truckee, South Lake Tahoe, and seven other towns, shared their community's evolution, concerns and their vision for growth and prosperity.

Much of this conversation was new to me. I've spent the better part of the last decade immersed in the science and politics of climate change and mountain areas. While I recognize that outdoor recreation and surrounding natural lands are critical economic drivers for many mountain communities both in terms of local business and quality of life for residents, I'm much more accustomed to hearing about it from a room of scientists and policy wonks, instead of one full of entrepreneurs and business leaders.
