Dear SCFA colleagues,

It is time to renew the SCFA board.  In accordance with our by-laws, the nominating committee sent a preliminary slate of four candidates to the membership on June 2, 2017, with a notice that further nominations could be made upon petition to the Secretary of the Association. We have received two additional nominations for eligible nominees who have agreed to serve, so now we have six candidates.

1. Noriko Aso
2. Ben Carson
3. Alan Christy
4. Chris Connery
5. Ronnie Lipschutz
6. Daniel Selden

According to our by-laws, the SCFA Executive Board consists of a minimum of seven and up to eleven members, elected by the members of the Association who serve staggered two year terms.  We have up to six open positions on the board, since five current board members (Hunter Bivens, Deborah Gould, Vanita Seth, Megan Thomas and Richard  Montgomery) will continue their terms through academic year 2017-2018. We wish to thank outgoing board member Karen Bassi for her service to  the UCSC Faculty through her membership in the SCFA and her service on the board.

Since we have up to six open positions and six nominees, the election seems likely to conclude in all six being elected to serve a two-year term of office that will run through the academic year 2018-2019.  Though the result may appear to be predetermined, we realize that our bylaws are not clear on whether an election must be held in a situation such as this one.  Therefore we are taking the cautious approach and having an election.  We anticipate one fall agenda item will be to study our by-laws and see whether we can make them more clear and useful in the future.  (If you would be willing to serve on a by-law study subcommittee of the SCFA to help us do this work, please let us know!)

According to the SCFA bylaws, therefore, we invite you to vote for individual candidates by completing this SCFA ballot by July 3, 2017.

We look forward to announcing the results of the election.

Best regards,
The SCFA Board
