Formula Car Challenge Joins NASA National Championship Event at Sonoma Raceway
August 3rd, 2014
Sonoma, CA
The Formula Car Challenge announced today that they will be adding the NASA National Championship event to their 2014 schedule. "Our schedule was unexpectedly changed last month when the WTCC cancelled their Sonoma Raceway event," stated Series Communications Director Mark Milazzo. "Our original plan was to host our FCC National Championship during the WTCC event. Once this was cancelled we needed to look at replacing our West Coast finale and our National event. We added the September Mazda Raceway event to the calendar, as we worked on a solution for the National Championship. Today, we are excited to announce that we will be a featured event at the NASA National Championships at Sonoma Raceway in November."
NASA National Champions will be among the handful of drivers who are considered for the Mazdaspeed Club Racer Shootout later this year. The Mazda Club Racer Shootout is the single largest prize in club racing. Since 2007 Mazda has annually promoted one talented club racer to the professional ranks. The $75,000 prize funds a drive in the 2015 Mazda MX-5 Cup. Last season, two FCC National Champions were selected by Mazda to participate.
"So we would not burden our drivers with additional costs for their 2014 season, we will be adding an additional two drop races to the final tally," added Milazzo. "This will allow them to attend the same amount of events as they budgeted for at the start of the season." The NASA National Championship event will feature three races, and will be decided based on the sum of points from the races, as well as a point for the fast qualifier and a point for fast race lap in each race in each class.
