Final Word from Dr. Smith
Take a moment and consider a few conversations Jesus had with people with whom He would have had serious differences of opinion:
  • Nicodemus - John 3 - Jesus did not agree with his understanding of how faith ought to be lived out.
  • The Samaritan woman - John 4 - Jesus did not agree with her lifestyle and her practice of religion.
  • The adulterous woman - John 8 - One of the Ten Commandments had been violated.
  • Matthew and Zaccheus - Matthew 9, Luke 18 - These men had sided with the pagan Romans to oppress the Jews, often through devious and unethical means.
When in conversation with these individuals, Jesus did not speak harshly. He did not condemn. He did not belittle them, call them names, or refuse to be with them. In fact, Jesus welcomed their company and graciously and patiently drew them to Himself.

By nature, we tend to be quick to judge, quick to condemn, and often feel a sense of satisfaction when we 'have the last word' which is often not a kind word.

Jesus modeled a communication style that stood firm on principle and morality, while guarding the self-worth of the person He was speaking to or speaking about. Two verses come to mind:

"For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him." (John 3:17)

"First take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye." (Matthew 7:5)
