SCICU Board Elects New Trustees and
Names Student of the Year at Oct. 12 Meeting
SCICU's Board of Trustees held its annual Fall meeting on October 12, 2016 at Columbia International University.
Election of New Trustees and Recognition of Outgoing Trustees
During the business meeting, the board elected the following business and education leaders as new trustees:

Victoria Biggers, a senior at Wofford College, was recognized at the October 12 Board meeting as the 2016 award winner of the McLean-Smith SCICU Student of the Year. This award also includes a $3,000 scholarship.
Biggers, a finance and economics double major, was honored for her significant contributions to and involvement in campus life at Wofford. Her business experience at Wofford includes establishing Wee Celebrations, a children's party service. Biggers was assisted in this development venture by The Space, Wofford's full-service center for professional development and entrepreneurship. The Impact and Launch Competition awarded Biggers with a $5,000 prize for buisness materials and co-working space at the Iron Yard entrepreneurship incubator.

Presidents' Panel Discussion
Dr. Todd Voss (pictured in foreground), president of Southern Wesleyan University, leads the Presidents' Panel Discussion. Other Presidents participating in the panel include Beth Dinndorf, President of Columbia College; Dr. David Swinton, President of Benedict College; and Dr. Maurice Scherrens, President of Newberry College.
During the awards luncheon, presidents of four of SCICU's member college and universities fielded questions from the board's at-large trustees. Topics of the lively discussion included regulations impacting higher education, growth of online programs, impact of campaign promises for free public higher education, and college evaluation/ selection by Generation Z.

2016-17 SCICU College Guide
Now Available
The 2016-2017 print edition of SCICU's popular College Guide is available to students, parents, school counselors and anyone interested in learning more about the 20 private non-profit colleges and universities that are members of SCICU. An initial distribution of more than 600 copies were sent to high schools, SCICU trustees, and members of the General Assembly in September.
The College Guide includes a concise statement on the benefits of a liberal arts education and a discussion of the cost of attendance as a value proposition. The publication features 2-page profiles of the member colleges and universities, a list of visitation days, and detailed information on federal and state student financial assistance. To emphasize the core principles of teaching and learning on our members' wonderfully diverse campuses, the Guide also features the 20 recipients of SCICU's 2016 Excellence in Teaching Award.
The digital edition of the College Guide will be available soon on SCICU's website. In addition to hot links, page-flippers, enhanced navigation tools, and videos, the new digital edition will be formatted for iPhones, iPads, Androids, and other Smart (HTML5) platforms - the social media world of today's students and a growing number of their parents.

Allen University Announces
Leadership Changes
In late September, Allen University named Dr. Ernest McNealey as interim president, replacing Dr. Lady June Cole, the institution's president since 2013.
Dr. McNealey was the president of Stillman College (Tuscaloosa, AL) for 16 years. He is the founder and principal of The McNealey Group, an Atlanta-based education consulting firm.
Located in Columbia, Allen University was created out of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church's desire to educated newly-freed slaves. Allen University was founded in 1870 as a private, Christian, liberal arts school. The university is one of five Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in South Carolina.

Title IX Training Workshops Held At Furman University
September 26-29, 2016
SCICU sponsored two Title IX training seminars for member colleges and universities September 26-29, 2016 at Furman University.
SCICU again partnered with attorneys Natasha Baker and Megan Farrell of the Hirschfeld Kraemer law firm for Title IX training. Baker and Farrell have significant experience in higher education and Title IX matters.
Title IX ASAP and Investigation Training was held September 26-27 for 30
faculty and staff from SCICU member institutions and public college colleagues. This first-level course is for faculty/staff administrators entrusted with investigating Title IX complaints or providing other forms of support such as awareness education.
Title IX ASAP Advanced Investigations was presented on September 28 and 29. This advanced training seminar included intensive, interactive training for faculty and staff who previously participated in basic level Title IX investigator training. More than 50 private and public college administrators attended the advanced training.
Compared to traveling out of state for national Title IX training, sponsoring Title IX seminars in South Carolina saved SCICU members approximately 70% on registration and travel-related expenses.
SCICU would like to thank Melissa Nichols, Title IX Coordinator for Wofford College / Furman University, for her role in linking the advanced training course with the basic training course and agreeing to co-locate the two on the Furman campus to achieve the highest level of economy of scale for SCICU member institutions.

SCICU Hosts Microsoft Azure Workshop,
Announces Grants for Member Institutions
SCICU and its business partner ScholarBuys hosted a Microsoft Azure Workshop on October 11 for campus leaders and system administrators from SCICU's member colleges and universities. Columbia-based IT-oLogy was the host site for the event.
Microsoft, ScholarBuys, Airnet Group, Veeam, and Barracuda shared how higher education institutions can reduce costs with a cloud deployment and how campuses can collaborate with partners to manage infrastructure, all while having security, accessibility, and flexibility. SCICU member college IT professionals participated in a plenary session and two separate workshops.
ScholarBuys announced at the workshop that SCICU members are eligible for Microsoft grants valued at up to $7,000 per institution towards a data center assessment (ASAT) and an agreed-upon workload migration into Azure through Airnet. Project services to be performed by Airnet include: (1) Engagement, Assessment (ASAT), and Planning Activities, (2) Test Environment Deployment, Set-up, and Configuration, (3) Proof of Concept, and (4) Knowledge Transfer and POC Review.
System administrators were also able to participate in a Microsoft Azure Lab, a 5 hour session focusing on the Microsoft Azure platform from an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) perspective.

Securing America's Future -
Free CIC Workshops for College Leaders
Is the future of your institution secure?
Sustainability is the most pressing concern at many independent colleges and universities, especially in the face of shifting demographics and economic uncertainty. But college leaders don't always know the best way to align their institution's current mission with new business models, or to identify peer-tested innovations, or to engage the faculty and other campus constituents in potentially disruptive change efforts.
The Council of Independent Colleges is launching a series of free workshops designed to help its member institutions prepare for the future more effectively. The half-day workshops will bring together teams of presidents, senior administrators, and faculty leaders to explore key trends in higher education and society, the urgent pressures facing individual colleges and universities, and potential solutions. Eight workshops will be offered at locations around the country between September 2016 and April 2017.
For SCICU member institutions, the nearest workshop will be at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 26, 2017.
