Allen University to Host SCICU
Fall Board Meeting October 12

The SCICU Board of Trustees will be at Allen University in downtown Columbia on October 12. The fall Board meeting serves as the organization's annual meeting.

In addition to recognizing retiring Trustees, the Board will elect new members, approve the organization's operating budget for FY 2016-2017, and hear year-end reports from the standing committees. At the luncheon that follows, the SCICU Student of the Year will be presented with the McLain-Smith Scholarship in the amount of $3,000. There also will be an open forum where a panel of college presidents will discuss higher education issues.

The Council of Presidents will meet at 9:00 a.m. The Board of Trustees meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will be preceded by registration and a social hour beginning at 9:30 a.m. The noon luncheon and program will adjourn by 1:30 p.m.

The meeting will take place in the recently-renovated Chappelle Auditorium in the historic Chappelle Administration building on the campus of Allen University. Designed by John Anderson Lankford, the nation's first black architect who is also known as the "Dean of Architects" in the African American community, the Chappelle Administration Building was completed in 1925 and listed as a National Historic Landmark as an outstanding example of Lankford's work in 1976.

Trustees attending the fall Board meeting will have an opportunity to experience the beauty and unique architectural features of the Chappelle Auditorium, one of only twelve historic landmarks in South Carolina, three of which are in the greater Columbia area.

SCICU Sponsoring Title IX Training
Seminars  September 26-29, 2016

SCICU is sponsoring two Title IX training seminars for member colleges and universities. Furman University will be providing conference space at the Trone Student Center for the training seminars.
SCICU is again partnering with attorneys Natasha Baker and Megan Farrell of the Hirschfeld Kraemer law firm for Title IX training. Baker and Farrell have significant experience in higher education and Title IX matters.

Title IX ASAP and Investigation Training will be held September 26-27 (Click here for online event registration.).  This seminar will essentially present the same content as the two-day training that almost 100 faculty and staff from SCICU member institutions attended in 2015 at Southern Wesleyan University. It is the first-level course for faculty/staff on SCICU member campuses who administrators entrust with investigating Title IX complaints or providing other forms of support such as awareness education.

Title IX ASAP Advanced Investigations will be presented on September 28 and 29 (Click here for online event registration.).This advanced training seminar is for faculty and staff who have previously participated in basic level Title IX investigator training. Due to the intensive and interactive nature of this advanced seminar, this two-day training will be limited to 50 participants.

Compared to traveling out of state for national Title IX training, sponsoring Title IX seminars in South Carolina will save our members approximately 70% on registration and travel-related expenses.

SCICU would like to thank Melissa Nichols, Title IX Coordinator for Wofford College / Furman University, for her role in linking the advanced training course with the basic training course and agreeing to co-locate the two on the Furman campus to achieve the highest level of economy of scale for SCICU member institutions.

SCICU Establishes Career
Services Consortium Site

COLUMBIA, SC --  SCICU has recently signed an agreement with Purple Briefcase to establish a career services consortium site on the SCICU website. Purple Briefcase is a modern career services management platform that looks great, has an interactive interface, engages students, and above all, is easy to use by administrators and employers. Purple Briefcase connects college career centers to students and employers while providing an excellent platform for career centers to manage their analytics, records, job postings, and events.

Purple Briefcase will provide a free-standing system that will house data and an authentication process for employers to connect and post their experiential opportunities on the SCICU consortium site. These opportunities will be seamlessly distributed to SCICU schools that have either Purple Briefcase or any other career management system.

SCICU represents a large business opportunity for Purple Briefcase, and they have put together a very aggressive pricing proposal for SCICU member colleges. If 1-6 colleges become customers, the discount rate is 10%. If 7-14 colleges become customers, they receive a 15% discount. If 15 or more colleges become Purple Briefcase customers, the discount rate is 20%. Presently there are 5 colleges that are Purple Briefcase customer; 5 colleges that are planning to become customers; and two more are evaluating proposals. SCICU is very pleased to be teaming up with Purple Briefcase to provide our member colleges with a state-of-the-art career services management system.

Purple Briefcase is presently developing the SCICU consortium site, and we hope to have it up and running in 30-45 days. Stay tuned for further announcements.

Securing America's Future -
Free CIC Workshops for College Leaders

Is the future of your institution secure? Sustainability is the most pressing concern at many independent colleges and universities, especially in the face of shifting demographics and economic uncertainty.  But college leaders don't always know the best way to align their institution's current mission with new business models, or to identify peer-tested innovations, or to engage the faculty and other campus constituents in potentially disruptive change efforts.

The Council of Independent Colleges is launching a series of free workshops designed to help its member institutions prepare for the future more effectively. The half-day workshops will bring together teams of presidents, senior administrators, and faculty leaders to explore key trends in higher education and society, the urgent pressures facing individual colleges and universities, and potential solutions. Eight workshops will be offered at locations around the country between September 2016 and April 2017.

For SCICU member institutions, the nearest workshop will be at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 26, 2017.

There is no cost to participate, but institutions must register in advance. For more information or to register for a workshop, visit
the CIC website at www.cic.edu/SecuringWorkshops.
