The Board of Trustees of the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance is pleased to announce the 2017 Gold Medal Award recipient is Nathaniel Reichek MD, FACC, FAHA, Professor of Medicine and Biomedical Engineering at Stony Brook University, SUNY. This award is presented annually by the SCMR for outstanding achievement in the field of CMR as well as exemplary service to the Society.
Dr. Reickek has contributed greatly to research in CMR for three decades. He was one of the very first cardiac imagers, along with Gerry Pohost and Charley Higgins, to delve into the field in its very earliest days. He has been an expert in cardiac MRI since 1983, when technology was still in its infancy. His legacy, one of many, is his priority to fostering positive, collaborative relationships with radiologists mentoring fellows to become leaders in the field.

SCMR 20TH ANNIVERSARY
 Leading up to this year's historic 20th Annual Scientific Sessions in Washington DC, SCMR will be sharing favorite memories, images, and stories from past leaders of the Society. This month Eike Nagel, Past President, shares his memory on the Board when SCMR discussed including CT into the society. CMS ISSUES FINAL 2017 RULE ON HOSPITAL OUTPATIENT PROSPECTIVE PAYMENT SYSTEM (OPPS)

Services (CMS) issued the Final 2017 Rule on the Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System (OPPS). This rule governs federal reimbursement for services provided in the hospital outpatient setting. This year, the rule included a comprehensive restructuring of the Ambulatory Payment Classification (APC) groups for imaging services. CMS assigns each individual medical service (i.e., each individual HCPCS code) to an APC group, and all services included within a particular APC group are reimbursed at the same rate. By law, all services included within a single APC group are required to be similar clinically and in resource usage

Native Magnetic Resonance T1-Mapping Identifies Diffuse Myocardial Injury in Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism (HT) is characterized by thyroid hormone deficiencies, which can lead to diffuse myocardial interstitium lesions in patients with HT. Myocardial longitudinal relaxation time (T1) mapping is a potential diagnostic tool for quantifying diffuse myocardial injury. Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging Predictors of Ventricular Arrhythmia in Tetralogy of Fallot
Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is the most common cyanotic congenital heart defect. Surgical management has resulted in dramatic improvements in mortality; however, burden of both atrial and ventricular arrhythmia remains an important cause of morbidity and mortality. Cardiac MRI is serially performed in this population to determine timing of pulmonary valve replacement.

Usefulness of Combined Functional Assessment by CMR and Tissue Characterization Versus Task Force Criteria for Diagnosis of Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy
The 2010 International Task Force criteria for the clinical diagnosis of arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy/ dysplasia (ARVC/D) did not take into account some unique capabilities of CMR, such as the detection of myocardial fat infiltration and fibrosis, that have been otherwise demonstrated to predict adverse events even in patients with suspected ARVC/D; moreover, the same criteria were generated by comparing patients (mean age of 44 years) to healthy participants of the multi-ethnic study of atherosclerosis (mean age of 60 years), with possible selection bias due to age-related differences in right ventricular volumes.
