THE 2015-2016 MEMBERSHIP YEAR BEGINS ON SEPTEMBER 1, 2016.

***New for 2017: Grad Student Membership Level***
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S NOTE
I hope you have all had an enjoyable summer. It has been a very busy one here in the SCMS Home Office. As such, you will notice that this is a larger issue of News Brief than usual. I hope that you will take the time to review the issue in its entirety as it contains important information on SCMS's new statement on digital scholarship and a Middle Eastern Studies Association letter on academic freedom and education in Turkey for which SCMS served as a co-signer. Also included are tributes to two important film and media scholars that we lost this summer, Victor F. Perkins and Elayne Antler Rapping.

On a lighter note, I am pleased to welcome the newest member of our staff, SCMS member Bruce Brasell. Bruce joins us in the newly-created position of Financial Analyst. While many of you know Bruce as a film and media scholar and from his many years of membership in SCMS, you may not have known that he also holds his Master's Degree in Accounting. As such, Bruce brings to the position both a wealth of experience, and a working knowledge of SCMS. We are fortunate to now have him on board.

We are also happy to welcome three members to the SCMS Board of Directors. Joining us in July were newly-elected board members, Miriam J. Petty of Northwestern University, and Derek Kompare of Southern Methodist University. Also joining us in an ex-officio capacity is Joshua Nelson of the University of Oklahoma. Joshua was recently named the Interim Director of the Film and Media Studies Program at OU.

This summer we bid a fond farewell to some valued members of our team. Debbie Rush, SCMS's longtime Account and Budget Representative, has moved from her shared position with SCMS and the University of Oklahoma to a full-time position with OU. I know you join me in thanking her for her hard work and dedicated service over the years, and in wishing her well in her new position.

Board members Kara Keeling and Neepa Majumdar completed their three-year board terms in June. Both Kara and Neepa brought commitment, professionalism, and unique perspective to each and every board meeting. We will miss them both.

As a reminder, the conference proposal and fee waiver request deadlines are just over one week away on Wednesday, August 31 at 5:00 p.m. CT. SCMS's 2016-17 membership year begins on Thursday, September 1, so please remember to renew your membership as soon as possible.

In closing, we have extended the deadline for receiving Cinema Journal Editor self-nominations by two weeks to Friday, September 30.  The term of the appointment is five years beginning January 1, 2018.  It will be preceded by a one-year transitional period spent working with the outgoing Editor, Will Brooker, beginning January 1, 2017.  If you intend to submit for the editor position, please notify me by email at your earliest convenience at [email protected] and include the subject line "CJ EDITOR".

WELCOME BRUCE BRASSELL!

Bruce Brasell, whom many of you know, joined the SCMS Home Office on August 8 in the newly created position of Financial Analyst.  In his new role, Bruce will work closely with the Executive Director, Jill Simpson, in budget planning, tracking, and analysis, as well as overseeing the day-to-day accounting functions of the Society.  Bruce's diverse background as a film and media scholar and longtime SCMS member, coupled with his eleven years of experience at the American Institute of CPA's, make him uniquely qualified for his new role.

SCMS wishes to welcome Bruce to the Home Office!

WELCOME MIRIAM J. PETTY, DEREK KOMPARE AND JOSHUA NELSON !

Miriam J. Petty is Assistant Professor in the Department of Radio/Television/ Film at Northwestern University. She earned her PhD from Emory University's Graduate Institute of the Liberal Arts and previously taught at Rutgers University in Newark, NJ and Princeton University in Princeton, NJ.  An academic with a longstanding commitment to public scholarship, Petty is also an avid producer of public programs.

Derek Kompare  is Associate Professor and Chair of Film and Media Arts in the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University. Derek joined the SMU FILM faculty in 2004, and has taught courses on media history, media theory, media industries, film and television genres, comics, video games, and fan cultures.

Joshua Nelson was recently named Interim Director of Film and Media Studies Program at the University of Oklahoma.  He is an Associate Professor of English and affiliated faculty with Native American Studies.  Joshua joins the SCMS Board of Directors as a non-voting member, representing the SCMS Home Office institution. He replaces outgoing Director, Caetlin Benson-Allott, who returned to Georgetown over the summer.

SCMS wishes to welcome Miriam, Derek and Joshua to the Board!

FAREWELL & THANK YOU, DEBBIE RUSH!

SCMS would like to thank Debbie Rush for her 14 years of service to the Society as the Account and Budget Representative.  Her infectious smile was a staple of conference registration.  Her hard work and dedication to the Society was evident;  she was the recipient of the SCMS Service Award in 2010.

We wish Debbie all the best as she continues her work with the University of Oklahoma's Film and Media Studies Program, and as she enters her new role in the English Department.

The 2016 SCMS Undergraduate Conference was a success, boasting high-level discourse, professionalism and collegiality from the student presenters and all attendees.  While the students were all from North American institutions, the conference was multi-cultural due to the inclusion of presenters from India, Vietnam, Georgia, Brazil and Hong Kong.  Our congratulations to the University of Colorado, Boulder Film Studies Program's  Tiel Lundy and Program Director, Ernesto Acevedo-Munoz, along with their team for their hard work in planning and executing this successful event!

The next SCMS-U Conference is scheduled for April 2017 in Minneapolis at the University of Minnesota.  Exact dates and more information will be provided in the near future.  If you are interested in hosting SCMS-U in the future, please contact the SCMS home office.

SIG & CAUCUS REMINDERS

- As a reminder, a t the March meeting, the SCMS Board of Directors voted to approve changes to the policies governing Scholarly Interest Groups. To read the updated policies in full, click here.
- Starting with the 2016-2017 membership year,  SCMS members will be asked to renew their membership in SIGs and Caucuses every 5 years through re-selecting their SIG and Caucus enrollment on the SCMS website at the time of membership renewal. This re-enrollment period will be announced in advance via emails to the SCMS membership at large. After this transition period, current SIGs will have two years to demonstrate that they can again reach the expected number of members to remain in good standing.  SIGS that were formed within the last two years will not be required to renew this year.
-Advance proposals for funding are to be submitted by a scheduled deadline in late November prior to the upcoming conference. Funding proposals will be reviewed by the SIG Funding Committee, to consist each year of the two SCMS Board liaisons to the SIGs, the two SIG Coordinating Committee co-chairs, the Treasurer, and a representative from the home office. All proposals will be approved if they meet the above guidelines, based on the availability of funds and meeting space. The home office will notify each SIG regarding the status of their proposal. Approved expenses will be reimbursed upon submissions of receipts after each conference.  For full details regarding reimbursable expenses, please visit the  Request Funding  page. If unexpended, these funds revert to the general SCMS fund at the end of each fiscal year.

- New Caucus and SIG logos (below) may be used after completing the online SCMS Logo Use Permission Form. Requests to use the SCMS brand must be submitted to the Board of Directors at least one month in advance of the proposed usage.  Once approval is received, you will be required to adhere to all published guidelines.  Failure to do so, can be grounds for revoking a SIG, subject to the decision of the board.

Society for Cinema and Media Studies
Statement on Digital Scholarship

SCMS has issued a statement on digital scholarship.  Below is a summary of this statement.  You can read the full statement here.

Summary

Creative uses of digital technologies enable new ways of knowing, seeing, and sharing, all of which has profoundly affected-and energized-scholarship, teaching, and service across the disciplines. At the same time, the kinds of work-and ways of working-made possible by digital arts and humanities present a challenge to traditional models of assessing academic work. This document reflects the commitment of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies to promote digital scholarship in our field. It provides a statement of principles to guide scholars and institutions in producing, supporting, and assessing digital work; a set of questions and ideas to help scholars articulate the value of digital arts and humanities work to colleagues, evaluators, and administrators; and a set of "best practices" for scholars to consider as they embark on digital projects and subsequently seek to explain the merit of those projects for the purposes of hiring, tenure, promotion, and salary review. We hope that this document will prove valuable not only to those currently undertaking or considering innovative projects in this realm, but also to those seeking to better understand the work of their colleagues.
THREATS TO ACADEMIC FREEDOM & HIGHER EDUCATION IN TURKEY

On July 21, 2016, SCMS joined with 59 other scholarly societies in co-signing a letter written by the Middle East Studies Association regarding the state of academic freedom and higher education in Turkey.  See the complete letter, including co-signing organizations  here .
IN MEMORIAM
It is with sadness that the Society for Cinema and Media Studies notes the recent passing of two foundational scholars of film and media studies.

Victor F. Perkins (December 22, 1936 - July 15, 2016)

V.F. Perkins's scholarship and teaching were distinguished by exceptional clarity, generosity and clear passion for the thrall of cinema. Perhaps most widely known for his foundational Film as Film: Understanding and Judging Movies (NY: Penguin Books, 1972) Perkins's career as a critic, scholar, editor, mentor and colleague is marked by his deep commitment to analysis of film aesthetics, film authorship, and close textual analysis. Among his many books and articles are extended analyses of La Regle du jeu, The Magnificent Ambersons, Johnny Guitar, the films of Hitchcock and of Ophuls. Perkins was co-founder of The Department of Film and Television Studies at University of Warwick and founding member of the editorial board of Movie: A Journal of Film Criticism. His colleague at Warwick, Allastair Phillips notes, "Victor made an immeasurable contribution to the development of Film Studies in the UK and the English speaking world and will be remembered by generations of students, scholars, and colleagues for his compassionate and insightful wisdom, critical insight, and generous spirit of intellectual enquiry. For all of us who fell under the spell of his work, he helped us to see and think more clearly."

A series of interviews with V.F. Perkins is currently available at "Film Studies for Free,"

Elayne Antler Rapping (December 24, 1938 - June 7, 2016)

Elayne Rapping was a pioneer of feminist media studies whose scholarship and teaching urged readers and students to take seriously television programming targeted to female audiences. A prolific scholar and dedicated mentor, Rapping's publications include The Looking Glass World of Nonfiction TV (Boston, MA: South End Press, 1987), The Movie of the Week: Private Stories/Public Events (Minneapolis, MN: University of Minnesota Press, 1992), Media-tions: Forays Into the Culture and Gender Wars (Boston, MA: South End Press, 1994), and Law and Justice as Seen on TV (NY: New York University Press, 2003) among others. Though groundbreaking as a scholar within academia, Rapping's work was also available to a much wider audience through her essays in publications such as The Village Voice and The Progressive. Rapping earned her Bachelor's degree from the University of California, Los Angeles and her Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. She was Professor of English and Director of Women's Studies at Robert Morris University (1970-1990), Professor of Communications at Adelphi University (1991-1998), and Professor of American Studies at State University of New York Buffalo until her retirement in 2009.  According to her obituary, "Rapping's experience navigating the male-dominated academic world in the late-1960s, while raising two young children, served to raise her consciousness about gender discrimination.  ... She became a women's rights activist and leading feminist voice ... as a single mother with a daughter and a son she became acutely sensitive to the cultural forces that reinforced societal gender roles."
