January 2016 - In This Issue:
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S NOTE
As we welcome the start of a new year and most of you head back to the classroom, we hope you will take a few minutes to look through this month's issue of News Brief.  It is intended to provide you with helpful information and tips for those of you who are planning your upcoming travel to the 2016 conference in Atlanta.

A preliminary draft of the conference program was posted at cmstudies.org last week.  We ask that you take the time to review the draft and send your minor corrections or changes to  [email protected] by Friday, January 15.

We are pleased to inform you that we have been able to negotiate favorable conference rates for SCMS members with three major airline carriers, as well as with Amtrak and Avis Car Rental.  Further, we have put together detailed information on everything from holding a conference reception to finding a hotel roommate.  Also included are forthcoming deadlines for conference sponsorship, advertising and exhibit space.  All can be found in this month's News Brief.

Lastly, the SCMS Board of Directors recently voted unanimously to approve a statement on campus open carry which we have included in the newsletter.  The statement is in opposition to Texas SB11, which will go into effect in August 2016 and allows for licensed handgun carriers to bring concealed handguns into buildings on Texas campuses.  In ratifying the new statement, SCMS joins the ranks of 29 other scholarly societies who have recently voiced their opposition to the measure.

I wish you a smooth start to the spring semester!

Jill Simpson
Executive Director

Your tax-deductible contribution helps SCMS continue its mission to serve an ever-growing community of film, television, and media scholars.  You can direct your donation to benefit the fund of your choice: the general fund, travel funds, awards funds, and SCMS-U travel funds.  Each fund offers a unique opportunity to benefit the field of film and media studies.

Your donations during 2014-2015 helped fund three travel grants for un- and underemployed scholars presenting at Atlanta 2016. While that's a great start, SCMS would love to be able to fund more individuals in need.

Please consider making a contribution to support our ongoing efforts to promote a broad understanding of film, television, and related media through research and teaching grounded in the contemporary humanities tradition.

Every donation, no matter the size, can make a difference.
