EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S NOTE
|
The countdown to Atlanta 2016 has begun with conference preparation now in full swing!
The Program Committee is about to wrap up its arduous task of reviewing and scoring the 1,200-plus proposals received this year. Once they complete their process in the next couple of weeks, the Home Office will then send out acceptance notifications, and Conference Scheduler Bruce Brasell will begin laying out each day's sessions.
If the timeline seems later to you this year, you are correct. Our 2016 conference dates are falling later on the calendar than in previous years.
The Atlanta Host Committee, led by Co-Chairs Matthew Bernstein and Alessandra Raengo, is hard at work on your behalf. They are busy putting together thought-provoking and engaging events that are informed by the rich history and culture of Atlanta and its growing recognition as a center for film and
media activity.
After receiving a large number of high quality event proposals, President Steve Cohan, Program Chair Neepa Majumdar, and Conference Manager Leslie LeMond are working in tandem to coordinate possible dates and venues for each.
Please note that we are currently seeking institutional sponsorship for some of our conference meetings and networking opportunities, including co-sponsorship of the Graduate Student Reception. If you think your institution might be interested, please let us know so that we may respond with details and information on the ways that a sponsorship can raise awareness of your program among conference attendees.
Wishing each of you and your loved ones a joyous and meaningful Thanksgiving. We are thankful for you and your many contributions to SCMS throughout the year.

Executive Director

2015 SCMS AWARD WINNER SPOTLIGHT
|
|
|
Tom Gunning
Distinguished Career Achievement Award
Tom Gunning, from the University of Chicago, was the winner of the 2015 Distinguished Career Achievement Award.
Who is your favorite film character or media figure? Why?
The figure/character that still defines cinema for me (and the world) is Charlie Chaplin. He is the medium itself as it emerged, unruly and active, poetic and violent, chaotic and deeply emotional (yes, sentimental in the great tradition). His profile is almost enough, his image in motion is more than enough, to define cinema in whatever era.
What is your favorite guilty pleasure movie or television show?
I hate this question! If it gives me pleasure I don't feel guilty. Although there are pleasures that border on madness or crime, I rarely find this question refers to them (only to little guilts, ones we think are charming). Frankly I take both my pleasures and my guilt seriously and again I hate this question!
What lead you to study cinema and media?
Having an excuse to my parents for why I went to the movies so much, when I was a student. It still serves to justify my love of films.
What are you currently researching/working on?
My forthcoming book is called The Invention of the moving and projected Image. It is equally about the history of film apparatuses and a theory of the moving image and the element of light.
What was the last movie you watched?
On a plane trans-Atlantic flight this week I watched Tim Burton's Big Eyes which was ok for a sleepless flight. But before that I saw Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, which I think is terrific.
What movie could you watch over and over again?
Dozens if not hundreds of them! But most of Alfred Hitchcock, Kenji Mizoguchi and Stan Brakhage.
Is there anything you would like to share with the membership?
My recent book which consists mainly of pictures:
The Fantasia of Color in Early Cinema
(University of Amsterdam).

Official Selections Named for Mobile Film Festival:
Act on Climate Change
The Mobile Film Festival: Act on Climate Change organized in partnership with the United Nations,
received 765 films from 70 countries.
The official selection of the Mobile Film Festival is composed of 75 one-minute films from 27 countries.
They all question climate issues with humor, passion, offset or in a off the wall manner. They all are very different but all of them are little moments of cinema we hope to share with the greatest number.
Voting closes on
November 30, 2015.
