Happy fall! As we reach the midway point in the academic term, I hope things are going smoothly for each of you.
In the coming weeks, the SCMS Home Office will be sending out several key emails to you including conference proposal accept/decline notices, the outcome of conference event proposal deliberations, and travel grant award recipient notices. Considering a good many of you relocate just prior to the beginning of the academic year, we ask that you please take a moment now to verify that we have the correct email address for you in your membership profile. This will ensure that you continue to receive notifications in a timely manner.
Conference proposal accept and decline notices will be emailed to you between November 2-9. If you have not received a notification by Friday, November 11, please email the Home Office at

Thank you to those of you who recently submitted event proposals for the 2017 Chicago conference. We received a total of eight proposals this year. All are currently being considered by the Caucus and SIG Liaisons, the Conference Program Committee, and the 2017 Chicago Host Committee Chairs who will make their recommendations to the Board of Directors at this weekend's fall meeting. Please note that proposals are evaluated based on their potential to attract a strong audience and to highlight the activities of their group(s). Conference budget limitations and scheduling are also taken into consideration in determining which events are accepted. All members who submitted proposals will be notified of the board's decision by email in early November.
This weekend, the Executive Council will also deliberate on the selection of a new Cinema Journal Editor, with an official announcement to be made by early November. The new Editor will begin his/her first year apprenticeship working with outgoing Editor, Will Brooker, as of January 1, 2017. Will's tenure as Editor officially ends on December 31, 2017, with the newly selected Editor taking the reins for a five-year term beginning on January 1, 2018.
In closing, please consider SCMS when planning your year-end charitable giving. By making a tax-deductible donation to the General Fund, you are helping SCMS to continue its mission of promoting a broad understanding of film, television, and related media. A donation to the Travel Funds for under/unemployed members and graduate student members allows you to directly assist your peers by helping defray the cost of their travel to the SCMS annual conference. An Award Funds donation supports SCMS's annual awards established to honor the best in our field. Finally, a donation to the SCMS-U Undergraduate Fund assists undergraduate students who typically have no access to professional resources to attend the annual undergraduate conference.

Fieldnotes is an SCMS project to conduct, circulate and archive interviews with pioneers of film and media studies. In addition to recognizing the contributions of key scholars, the project also aims to foster knowledge of and interest in the diverse and dynamic developments that have shaped -- and continue to shape -- our expanding field.
Fieldnotes is currently led by Haidee Wasson, with the help of a committee comprised of Patrice Petro and Barbara Klinger. It is sponsored both by SCMS and by ARTHEMIS, a Concordia University based research team investigating the history and epistemology of moving image studies.
Since the Atlanta Conference, the Fieldnotes team has been completing production on interviews with the following distinguished members.

The SCMS War and Media Studies Special Interest Group invites submissions to its inaugural Graduate Student Writing Award. A $100 cash prize will be awarded annually to an outstanding essay on any topic related to war and media studies. The award panel will consist of the SIG co-chairs and two scholars with expertise in the field.
The deadline for submissions is December 2, 2016.
The rules:
- Entrants must be enrolled on a recognised programme of graduate study at the time of submitting work to the competition.
- Entrants must be members of SCMS and the War and Media Studies SIG.
- Essays should be between 6,000 and 8,000 words (including references) and be formatted as PDFs.
- Submissions may have been prepared as coursework essays, or as part of a dissertation or thesis.
- Essays must not have been published or accepted for publication at the time of entry.
- The author's name and affiliation should not appear anywhere on the essay. An application form, to be submitted as a separate document to the essay, is available here.
- Applicants may only submit one essay.
- Co-authored works will share the $100 cash prize between authors.
- The deadline for submissions is December 2, 2016. The winner will be announced at the SCMS War and Media SIG meeting in Chicago.

2016 NATIONAL FILM REGISTRY NOMINATIONS
Nominations Due October 20, 2016
The National Film Preservation Board will hold its annual meeting at the Library of Congress in early November 2016. At the meeting, film titles will be selected for inclusion on the National Film Registry at the end of this year.
Please submit your suggested nomination by emailing SCMS representatives Matthew H. Bernstein (
[email protected]) and Jenny Horne (
[email protected]) no later than
8pm EST on Thursday, October 20
. Please include three or four sentences (maximum) justifying your film submission's importance.
The Registry includes student films, experimental titles, orphan films and documentaries as well as fiction films.
