100,000 SIGHS OF RELIEF IN MISSISSIPPI
Chief Justice John Roberts: "Congress passed the Affordable Care Act to improve health insurance markets, not to destroy them."

As an organization that has been working to educate and enroll as many Mississippians as possible in the Health Insurance Marketplace, we are very pleased that the Supreme Court further validated the legitimacy the law by upholding the subsidies.

The ACA was always clear that the subsidies provided were meant to be available for all eligible consumers in the Marketplace, regardless of whether a state had its own Exchange or if they used the Federal one.  This case was clearly a political one meant to severely damage the law.  Fortunately, the Supreme Court saw this for what it was and decided in favor of the millions of Americans who benefit everyday from this law.

The ACA is the law of the land. It's a law that is working to improve the lives of millions of Americans.

Our State policy makers should recognize that health reform is working, abandon efforts to undermine it, and instead take advantage of the opportunities that health reform offers to improve lives. The next step should be the expansion of Medicaid.

States that have expanded Medicaid have seen large gains in the number of adults with health insurance, and they are saving money in their budget. Mississippi has failed to expand Medicaid and has fallen further behind, leaving 300,000 Mississippians uninsured.

In short, the Supreme Court got it right. Phil Bryant and other state policy makers need to accept health reform is the law of the land and now work to make sure that it succeeds in providing access to affordable coverage for as many people as possible.
