July 22, 2014 was a landmark date for national efforts to provide workforce services. With passage of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), our workforce system is both strengthened and streamlined. We look forward to sharing details on this Act in the coming months. In early September, I am joining the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce on its annual delegation to Washington, D.C. This is a great opportunity to thank our elected officials for their support of WIOA, as well as further advocate and raise awareness of our region's priorities.

Recent media coverage of our work has been quite positive. A few highlights: an op/ed piece in the UT-San Diego, discussing the plight of the long-term unemployed; on Aug. 4, I was honored to join my friend Phil Blair of Manpower to discuss youth employment on KPBS; and on Aug. 22 at 9:30 a.m., I am appearing on UT-San Diego's "Community Spotlight" podcast.

Lastly, mark your calendars for Oct. 2. We are looking forward to a special event that day to release our research reports on five priority employment sectors in our region. We have joined efforts with our community college partners to align our focus and better understand our diverse region. You won't want to miss it.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!
