Are you that person?
Our board recruits year-round, but at
this time we are particularly focused on recruiting new members for the
2017-18 school year. Are you a parent in the district who can offer a special skill (graphic design, a second language, fundraising ability, administrative or accounting skills, etc.)?  Do you have a business in San Gabriel and are looking for a way to participate more in the community? Having a child in the school district is not a requirement.

If you think that you or someone you know would like more information about being a SEF board member, please contact Adela Angiuli at 626.451.5465, or visit: SEFfor8schools.org

President's Message
The summer is flying by...
and for many of us, kids included, there didn't seem to be much of a "vacation" from the hectic pace of the school year.

The SEF Board of Directors is already planning for the 2017-18 school year.
Our meetings are filled with ideas for fundraising, event planning and discussions concerning the best ways to allocate limited resources so that they serve the greatest number of students. Would you like to have a voice in these discussions? We need ideas and help from all of our stakeholders: parents, teachers, school administrators and community leaders, to make beneficial decisions.

The SEF Board of Directors raises every cent that we donate to the District. Money is raised from grants, parent and community donations, fundraising events and from the fees charged for our Summer Academy. While we partner with the SGUSD to identify their needs, we do not receive any direct financial support from the SGUSD. Your donations are needed to keep our SEF funded programs going. A SEF representative will be present at every upcoming school round-up and registration. Just as you are asked to support your school's PTA, we are asking that you support SEF with a minimum $10 donation. If every family donates at least $10, we will be able to support:
1. Art Instruction at the elementary schools
2. Support teacher grants and equipment needs at JMS
3. Continue to fund the Naviance program and keep the library open after school at GHS

These are just a few of the ways SEF supported our students last year. We hope to continue these great programs and many others for 2017-18, but it won't happen without your support.

I hope that you and your family can take advantage of the next 3 weeks before school starts to enjoy a concert in the park, a family get-away or just ice cream and a movie. Good luck as you prepare for another fabulous school year!

Look for SEF on August 1st at
National Night Out!
SEF is joining the City of San Gabriel and the SGPD as we celebrate our community, get to know our neighbors and learn how to keep each other safe.

Look for the red SEF tent as you enjoy the festivities!

Youth Fitness Expo!
SEF would like to thank the community for coming out to make our Youth Fitness Expo on June 10th a success.  Everyone who attended had a GREAT time.

The fabulous event focused on the health and wellness of youth in the community and brought businesses and organizations together to share information about options for fun, healthy activities in the San Gabriel Valley. Attendees had the opportunity to witness live demonstrations and performances, cooking demos, plant seeds, sign up for individual or team sports, and more!
Energize was hosted by SEF thanks to generous grant funding provided by the San Gabriel Community Foundation. We are incredibly grateful to our donors, sponsors and vendors including:

Another Successful Summer Academy Program is Complete!
The SEF Summer Academy has grown to become a program that students and their families look forward to each year. For the fifth summer in a row, the SEF Board of Directors came together to provide
a high quality program filled with exciting learning opportunities for youth in and around the community.

In June over 500 students in grades 1-12
were w elcomed to the Washington, Jefferson
and Ga brielino High School campuses. They were enrolled in classes designed to enhance and strengthen each student's knowledge and skills. The program provided a variety of enrichment and get ahead credit course options which are aimed at assisting each student in achieving optimal individual growth.
A great big thank you to the Summer Academy Committee, the SEF Board of Directors, all of our volunteers, teachers, staff, administrators, district partners, families and of course students, for making this engaging, educational, and fun summer program possible. We hope that each of our students have sharpened their skills and experienced the joy of summer learning with SEF. We are already looking forward to 2018!

SEF Donates $7,000 to Support SGUSD Libraries
As one of the final grants for the 2016/17 school year,
the SEF Board of Directors voted to donate $1,000 to each of the 5 elementary schools, Jefferson Middle School and
Gabrielino High School. Thanks to additional State allocations , Del Mar did not have a need for funds.

Several of the SEF Board Members were able to make presentations at each of the schools during the back-to-school nights in May. SEF is very proud to be able to contribute to excellent education in our city. Your donations benefit your school and strengthen the whole district.

Music First -
A Celebration in our Schools!
Thanks to generous grant funding from The Pasadena Showcase of the Arts (PSHA), the San Gabriel Educational Foundation is once again bringing incredible theatre, dance and music performances to over 2100 elementary school students in the fall.

Accepting the award in April were (left to right), incoming PSHA President Marilyn Anderson, SEF Board Member David Localio, SEF Board Member Catherine Cordero and current PSHA President Lynn Mehl.

PSHA has awarded more than 21 million dollars in gifts and grants in support of the arts in organizations like SEF since 1948. We are grateful to PSHA for investing in SEF and the students of the San Gabriel Unified School District.
Together we can and do make a difference!

Future Doctors of America program
a Big Success at JMS
Thanks to the Institute of Natural Medicine, Dr. Jonci Jensen and Katherine  Kleine , SGCF board member, SEF was able to facilitate a new program at JMS in the Spring of 2017.

The Future Doctors of America program met after school on Tuesdays for 10 weeks and gave the students an opportunity to learn more about the risks of heart disease as well as inspire them to pursue careers in healthcare. Students learned how to listen to heart sounds with their stethoscopes, take blood pressures, cook a healthy meal and even had a visit from our local paramedics and fire fighters.

SEF Receives Grant Support....
A major source of the money SEF utilizes for its programs comes from grants to our foundation from other incredible non-profits as well as other local government sources. The SEF President and Executive Director have worked together to identify and apply for grants from several sources. These grants have been instrumental in supporting music assemblies, after-school programs at JMS, the Youth Fitness Expo, and purchasing headphones for ELD classes at JMS.

SEF would like to acknowledge and extend our sincere appreciation to the following organizations for believing in the mission of our foundation and the students of the SGUSD.
  • LA County Board of Supervisors -
    Michael Antonovich and Kathryn Barger
  • The Music Center
  • Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts
  • San Gabriel Community Foundation
  • San Gabriel Valley Medical Center
    Foundation Fund
  • Smart and Final
  • Walmart Corporation
