Executive Director's Notes

Next week I am excited to travel to Washington, D.C. February 27-28 to let our elected leaders know how museums are vital to our nation. I will join more than 300 museum professionals from across the country who will participate in Museums Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill, an annual event orchestrated by the American Association of Museums (AAM).

Museums create educational programs and economic opportunities in our communities in the Southeast. As museum professionals, we want to share the critical contribution museums are making in the nation.

Join me in speaking up for our museums in your local community and on state and national levels.

Susan Perry

Executive Director

Visitor Voices

The Visitors' Voices and Small Museums Committees of The American Association of State and Local History (www.aaslh.org) have been talking about how to encourage more small local history organizations to use evaluation and visitor research.

Some folks have suggested that figuring out what they really need to know from their visitors, as well as how to find that out is a major sticking point. We are hearing that people who work in small museums just do not have the time to, first, decide what information would be most useful to them and, then, wade through the various methods to find the best way to get that information.

We are considering a joint project that would address these "what" and "how" questions. But, before we delve in, we would like to know from those of you who work in small organizations (with budgets less than $250,000) if this is the right place to start.

If you work in a small organization (paid or volunteer), please take a moment to answer just a few questions and let us know if we're on the right track. The survey will take 5 minutes. To take the survey click on the link provided below:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/VisitorVoicesSmallMuseums. The survey will close on Feb. 29, 2012.

Thank you for helping us better meet your needs!
