Dear SENG Friends and Family,

Happy New Year! We at SENG are very excited to kick off 2012 with the launch of the new SENG website. You asked, and we delivered. We have a new look with all the great navigation and search features you have requested, but you can still find the information and resources we have all learned to rely on for nurturing our children, families and friends, and ourselves. Whether you are new to SENG or new to the website, enjoy a guided tour of all of our new and seasoned resources.

Some new faces join our new look. I want to welcome our new Executive Director, James Maloney, and new board members Kathleen Casper, Joy Navan, and Tiffany O'Neill. We are excited about the talents that these individuals bring to SENG. We give our heartfelt thanks to Rosina Gallagher, Mary Lovell, and Steven Pfeiffer for their service as they complete their board terms but continue to stay involved through committees and other volunteer work. Thank you all for your continued service to SENG.

As I begin this year as SENG's new President, I realize I stand on the shoulders of giants. I have learned so much from all of SENG's past leaders: "the art of grace under pressure" from Rosina Gallagher, "the art of future thinking" from Wenda Sheard, "the art of risk-taking" from Sheri Hill, "the art of compassionate coaching" from Arlene DeVries, but, most of all "the art of communicating love" from Jim Webb. You, too, are all a part of this SENG family. So raise your glasses as I toast to SENG: "May SENG grow in 2012 by being willing to take a risk to achieve our vision through love and compassion for our gifted children, families, friends and individuals!"

Special Issue: GIFTED ADULTS

Growing Old Gifted
by Annemarie Roeper

The I of the Beholder(The following excerpt from The "I" of the Beholder: A Guided Journey to the Essence of a Child, by Annemarie Roeper, is reprinted by permission of Great Potential Press.)

Maybe that's the task of the gifted older old person: to look at things as they are, without trying to compensate or replace. I will never be young again. I will never drive a car again. My life on this planet is definitely moving toward its very end. This is probably the last stage of my life. Some of my dreams will not ever be fulfilled. In fact, one of the things we give up at old age, or perhaps sooner, is that we have witnessed plenty of change but not much progress... Read More

Lori Comallie Caplan"The Apple Doesn't Fall Far From the Tree"
by Lori Comallie-Caplan

Facilitating SENG Model Parent Groups has provided me with unquestionable evidence that gifted kids come from gifted parents. What is surprising, is that parents are often unaware of their own giftedness. When I am doing parent groups, I always make the request, "Raise your hand if you are here because you have gifted children." Then I say, "Keep your hand in the air if you are gifted." So many hands go down... Read More

"Self-Regulation:
Cash photo jpgEssential Skills for Adolescent Gifted Students"
by Richard M. Cash, Ed.D.
January 19, 2012

As gifted children move into adolescence, motivating and engaging them in learning becomes more complex and complicated. In many cases this perceived lack of motivation and/or engagement may be due to the students' deficit in the academic strategies of self-regulation to learn independently. It is essential that parents and teacher assist students in developing the skills of self-regulation, including planning, organizing and meta-cognition. This session will offer suggestions as to how to develop self-regulated learners and ideas of how to encourage autonomous learning.

100 Words of Wisdom
(In approximately 100 words, experts from around the world offer their perspective on some aspect of giftedness.)

Linda Silverman

"Giftedness is not what you do or how hard you work. It is who you are. You think differently. You experience life intensely. You care about injustice. You seek meaning. You appreciate and strive for the exquisite. You are painfully sensitive. You are extremely complex. You cherish integrity. Your truth-telling has gotten you in trouble.  Should 98% of the population find you odd, seek the company of those who love you just the way you are. You are not broken. You do not need to be fixed. You are utterly fascinating. Trust yourself!" ~ Dr. Linda Kreger Silverman
