ADOPTION EVENT A SUCCESS!
Many thanks to Tri-County Mall for a valuable partnership in again hosting  Tristate area animal shelters and rescues for the TEACHER'S PET ADOPTION EVENT on Saturday, August 23rd, 2014.  Area animal shelters and rescues were welcomed to bring their adoptable dogs and cats to this event in hopes of finding their 'forever homes'! Several animals were fortunate to have gone home with their new families!

Thank you to the following organizations that participated: Animal Adoption Foundation, Franklin County Humane Society, Tails of Hope, Purrfect Friends, Little Orphans Kitten Rescue, Pet Lovers, Inc., Dream House Rescue, Vitas Innovative Hospice Care, and Circle Tail, Inc.!

Great job all!

United Pet Fund is a dedicated support organization for the myriad of small "mom-and-pop" nonprofit animal shelters, rescues and care organizations in the tri-state (150+). Due to lack of economy of size, these organizations struggle for funds and training to run the business end of being a nonprofit. UPF's mission statement, "Empowering all those who help needy animals!" offers its members and others services, resources, food and emergency funding when needed.

PET HEALTH DAY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

UPF will be hosting its annual Pet Health Day in Over the Rhine on Sunday, October 5th, 2014, at the St. Francis Seraph Church on Liberty and Vine. The event runs from Noon - 4 pm. You can get all the details about the event by going to our website at
www.unitedpetfund.org. If you feel you would like to volunteer at this event, please let us know by contacting us at [email protected] .

Great day of giving back to a community that is under-served when it comes to pet health. Whether you are 'host' for a family as they go through the event, helping in the  pet food distribution area, registering participants, or serving the other volunteers, it is a satisfying day for all!

A LETTER FROM THE DESK OF DR Z

Do you ever remember being asked to write a paper or thesis where you were left to your own devices as to subject matter, but also asked to be informative. When this came up, it probably instilled a sense of dread in you as you racked your brain trying to come up with a subject matter. Many times this was put off until absolutely the last minute unless an epiphany occurred earlier. Procrastination can be an art form, and some are better at it than others.

The dreaded writer's block can also infect and affect veterinarians. Unfortunately we cannot just look on the pharmacy shelf for a tablet or Rx than cure this malady. In creating and putting together this newsletter I usually enter this task with a clear direction about what I would like to share with you, and inform you about at the same time. That was till I was struck with a vicious case of Writer's Block.

The next step was to ask the staff on what they thought was an appropriate subject matter to discuss. For some reason they brought up Separation Anxiety. I am not sure where that came from, but they insist that Hunter (my dog Hunter) suffers from this malady. They even went so far as to take a picture that proved this. Having Dr. Dwertman discuss Storm Anxiety in the June Newsletter, and with all the events around the world creating a sense of overall anxiety, my feelings were that we take on the attitude of thinking good thoughts.

I do not know about you, but it just looks he is just resting while Dad goes about his job.The actual truth of the matter is that Hunter, being a male in an almost all-female-environment each day, gets his 'anxiety' from certain staff members who look upon him as their own personal 'Barbie Doll' that needs to be 'dolled-up' in some fashion.

'Is that the look of anxiety, or the look of "Dad, please save me!'"

No wonder he is actively seeking to get away from those who look to do this to him. Being a gentleman, he does not protest, but I can feel for him in the indignity of it all.  Separation Anxiety my foot!  Hunter is the one who wishes he had a 'mental block' that would keep him from remembering what he looked like as he became the 'Tootsie Dog'.

Fleas.  They could happen to you!

This article title could read, "Fleas. It happened to me!"  I like to pride myself on being an excellent pet owner, but recently I had a rude awakening.  I was lounging on my cozy couch on a Sunday afternoon catching up on some mindless television when I noticed Zeke (my 5 y/o Cavalier) turned rapidly to scratch at his back leg. I immediately started a mini-physical exam on him (as my dogs are often subject to) and found A FLEA!  Big deal, right?  Yes, it is a big deal because where there is 1 live flea; there are millions of eggs that have been laid and are now waiting to hatch.  I found that I was 2 days late on their topical flea prevention.  That is all it took!

Fleas have been a big problem this summer despite our pretty harsh winter, so be diligent about your flea medication and if you notice any itching, let us know!  Typically, the itching takes place on our pet's rear end and stomach but can be anywhere where the fleas have set up shop.  You may also see what is called "flea dirt".  This debris is flea poop that appears within the coat and looks like specs of dirt.  To confirm, you may place the flea dirt on a white paper towel and run some water over it.  It will turn the paper towel pink due to the blood that is in the flea poop.

Once you see a flea or suspect fleas have been bothering your pet, you must treat your pet AND the environment where they reside.  Eggs could be anywhere, so wash all pet bedding.  Cut up a flea collar and put it in your vacuum canister and vacuum all rugs, carpets, drapes that hang to the floor. We then recommend spraying the area with an environment control spray like Mycodex which kills all life stages of the flea!  This process is to be repeated (along with pet flea prevention) 30 days later to ensure all evidence of the fleas are gone.

If this occurs, call the clinic, because we can walk you through all the steps necessary to make sure these little pests are taken care of!  From handouts to flea prevention; we have you covered!

The best way to ensure fleas don't bother your pet is with proper prevention.  Here is a recent list of the flea prevention we carry at the clinic. Feel free to stop by any time and we can go over these products with you and decide which one best suits you and your pet!

Vectra 3D:
Vectra is a 30 day topical flea and tick prevention for dogs.

Bravecto:

Trifexis

Blue Ash's Summit Park
 Goes to the Dogs!

On Saturday, October 4th, 2014, at the brand new Blue Ash Summit Park off Glendale-Milford Road (the old Blue Ash Airport), the second annual Paws in the Park event will be held. Animal-related vendors, shelters, rescues and advocacy groups will be staffing booths for a fun-filled 3 hours from 11 am - 2 pm. Great time to check out the new park with your 4-legged canine family member, or possibly help find a forever home for a new member!

The City of Blue Ash has plans to develop a Dog Park near the area where this event will be held, and would welcome your input as to what you may want to see in a new Dog Park. Take a couple of hours off, bring your best friend(s), and enjoy the excitement!

FOR THOSE AFTER-HOUR EMERGENCIES!

Many times family and pet emergencies tend to follow Murphy's Law and always seem to happen at the most inconvenient times: weekends, nights, and Holidays. Most 'emergencies' are not really emergencies, but rather inconveniences. True  emergencies: acute trauma, fractures, bleeding episodes, seizures, and breathing problems, should make it to an emergency clinic as these type of medical problems  will need continued care and monitoring. The 2 emergency clinics we normally refer to are:
MedVet on Red Bank Road:          513-561-0069
or
The CARE Center on Kemper:      513-530-0911

For those 'non-emergency emergencies', itching, bee stings with mild facial swelling, mild vomiting and/or diarrhea, scratches, etc., the following Excel File Attachment will show what is available Over-the-Counter ( OTC -no prescription needed) at drugstores or grocery stores with drugstore departments to help deal with these situations. We recommend printing it off and keeping it in a convenient location. In a best case scenario, you can call and see if you can talk with Drs. Zekoff or Dwertman directly. If not, follow the dosages and recommendations (and precautions) as listed.
